Weekend Box-Office: JOKER Takes Down MALEFICENT Sequel With $18.9 Million

The comic book origin story "Joker" made a comeback this week, claiming the top spot while Disney's "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" finished in second place. However, the distance between the two is extremely small, and could end up being switched when the finals come in. Meanwhile, newcomers "Black and Blue" and "Countdown" performed as expected, which isn't particularly impressive.

In Theaters: BLACK AND BLUE, COUNTDOWN and THE CURRENT WAR (Director's Cut)

It look like it's going to be a slow weekend at the box-office, with just three low profile wide and semi-wide releases. The cop thriller "Black and Blue" opened in 2,062 theaters to a pretty negative reception from critics and moviegoers. The film, which stars Naomi Harris and Tyrese Gibson, has raked in $675,000 from Thursday previews and will probably finish the weekend with around $6 million.

Another new release is the micro-budget horror film "Countdown", which has also been mauled by critics. Moviegoers aren't particularly enjoying it either, with CinemaScore giving it a terrible "C+" grade based on their opening night polls. "Countdown" brought in $515,000 from previews and will probabil score a $7-8 million opening weekend from 2,675 theaters.

Meanwhile, "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil", "Joker" and "Zombieland: Double Tap" are in a tight race in the Top 3.

The semi-wide release I mentioned above is the biopic "The Current War", which is being released in its Director's Cut form in 1,022 theaters. The film was initially scheduled for release in 2017, but ended up getting shelved after Harvey Weinstein got into trouble and his company went belly-up. Despite being an improvement on the film's original cut, it's still far from a masterpiece, receiveing a mixed reception from critics and audiences. It's box-office prospects are also limited with expectations for a $2 million debut this weekend.

In other news, Robert Eggers' new horror film "The Lighthouse" starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe has expanded nationwide (578 new locations). Coming back this weekend are Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" (1,674 locations) with 10 extra minutes of footage, and the Guillermo Del Toro-produced horror film "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" (1,567 locations).

THE LIGHTHOUSE (2019) - Trailers, Images and Posters

"The Lighthouse" is a psychological horror film directed by Robert Eggers ("The Witch") from a script he co-wrote with his brother Max Eggers. The film stars Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe as two lighthouse keepers on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s, who faced with solitude begin to lose their sanity and become threatened by their worst nightmares.

"The Lighthouse" premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival where it won the FIPRESCI Prize, and it opened in select theaters on October 18, 2019.

In Theaters: MALEFICENT MISTRESS OF EVIL, ZOMBIELAND DOUBLE TAP, THE LIGHTHOUSE, JOJO RABBIT and JAY & SILENT BOB REBOOT

This week we have two new wide releases, both sequels, competing for the top spot at the box-office against "The Joker". The first is Disney's "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil", which is off to a decent start with $2.6 million from Thursday night previews. Althought reviews for the film have been less enthusiastic compared to the first film, the audience reception looks solid ("A" grade from CinemaScore's polls), and the film is expected to finish the weekend with as much as $35 million from 3,790 theaters (a huge step down from the first film's $69.4 million debut in 2014).

The other new arrival is the horror comedy "Zombieland: Double Tap", which raked in $2.85 million from previews. The overall reception is mixed-to-positive, both from critics and moviegoers ("B+" grade from CinemaScore). The R-rated film could open with around $25 million from 3,468 theaters, which is on par with its predecessor's $24.7 million opening weekend in 2009.

In limited release we have some interesting new films. The best of the bunch is the horror film "The Lighthouse" from acclaimed filmmaker Robert Eggers ("The Witch"), starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe. Of couse, it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but genre fans should definitely check it out.

Also out in select theaters are the dark satire "Jojo Rabbit" written and directed by Taika Waititi ("Thor Ragnarok"), and Kevin Smith's "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot", the seventh film in the filmmaker's View Askewniverse.

• The holiday dramedy "Last Christmas" directed by Paul Feig ("Bridesmaids") and starring Emilia Clarke ("Game of Thrones") and Henry Golding ("Crazy Rich Asians"). The screenplay is written by Emma Thompson and playwright Bryony Kimmings.
• The horror sequel "The Gallows Act II", a follow-up to the 2015 Blumhouse found-footage horror of the same name. Filmmakers Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing returned to write and direct the sequel. The film features an almost entirely new cast that includes Ema Horvath, Chris Milligan, Brittany Falardeau, Anthony Jensen, Dennis Hurley, Jono Cota, Erika Miranda and Jener Dasilva
• The psychological horror film "The Lighthouse" starring four-time Oscar nominee Willem DaFoe and Robert Pattinson. The film hails from "The Witch" filmmaker Robert Eggers.
• Yet another horror movie, the cheesy B-movie flick "Devil's Revenge" starring William Shatner, Jeri Ryan and Jason Brooks, all three alums of the "Star Trek" franchise.
