David Fincher to Direct Brad Pitt in ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD Netflix Sequel Written By Quentin Tarantino

A sequel to Quentin Tarantino's 2019 film "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" is in the works at Netflix with David Fincher set to direct from a script written by Tarantino. The film does not have an official title. Brad Pitt will reprise his Oscar-winning role as stuntman Cliff Booth. The project is reportedly being fast-tracked, and is expected to begin filming this July in California.

The sequel is being set up under Fincher's first-look deal at Netflix, indicating that sequel rights may already be privately retained by Tarantino. No other cast is set, but it doesn't seem likely that Leonardo DiCaprio or Margot Robbie will return. Although plot details are unknown, the project seems very Cliff Booth-centric. Netflix is said to have paid over $20 million for Tarantino's screenplay.

Although surprising that Tarantino won't direct his own material, the filmmaker has previously written scripts that he did not end up helming, including Tony Scott's "True Romance" and Robert Rodriguez's "From Dusk till Dawn". Tarantino recently scrapped plans for his 10th and supposedly final film "The Movie Critic.", which would have starred Brad Pitt in the lead role. The story was said to take place in the '70s and follow a film critic who wrote for a porn magazine. It had been rumored that Pitt would be playing some version of his "Once Upon a Time" character Cliff Booth, who in Tarantino's novelization of his own feature was revealed to be quite the movie buff.

Meanwhile, Fincher is developing a "Squid Game" spin-off series with Dennis Kelly ("Utopia"). He has also been working with "Gone Girl" writer Gillian Flynn on a mysterious new project.

Oscars 2020: PARASITE Wins Best Picture - The Complete Winners List

The 92nd Annual Academy Awards were handed out Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Once again, the Oscars ceremony went hostless, but the show itself, which clocked in at nearly three hours long, was still a dull mess filled with badly written scripts for the hosts and lackluster musical moments (except for Eminem's long overdue performance of "Lose Yourself").

However, towards the end of the overlong ceremony, something happened that made up for enduring all that mediocrity. In a historical upset, Bong Joon Ho's "Parasite" became the first foreign language film to win Best Picture. The film also took home three other major awards: Best Director, Original Screenplay and International Feature.

Heading into the big night, Sam Mendes' one-shot war epic "1917" was the big favorite for top honors, but ended up with just three wins in technical categories: Cinematography (Roger Deakins scored his second win in three years after being nominated 16 times), Visual Effects and Sound Mixing.

Another three films went home with two trophies each. "Joker" won Actor in a Leading Role (Joaquin Phoenix) and Original Score (Hildur Guðnadóttir). "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" nabbed wins for Supporting Actor (Brad Pitt) and Production Design. And the racing biopic "Ford V Ferrari" won for Film Editing and Sound Editing.

The Best Actress award went to Renée Zellweger for her portrayal of Judy Garland in the biopic "Judy". Taika Waititi took home the Adapted Screenplay award for his work on "Jojo Rabbit".

Netflix entered the Oscars with 24 Oscar nominations, but went home with just two wins. The streamer walked away with Laura Dern's Supporting Actress win for her performance in "Marriage Story" (the film lost out in the other five categories in which it was nominated), and the Best Documentary award for "American Factory".

Nominated for 10 Oscars, Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman" lost out in all categories. The streaming giant's two nominated animated films "I Lost My Body" and "Klaus" both lost to "Toy Story 4", which was one of the night's big surprises.

Elton John won his first Oscar in 25 years for the end-credits song of his own biopic "Rocketman". While he also won for "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" from the 1994 "The Lion King", this is his first win shared with his primary lyricist of the last 53 years, Bernie Taupin.

As expcted, the In Memoriam segment this year also left out some notable names. The video segment did not include Luke Perry ("Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", "Riverdale"), Sid Haig ("House of 1000 Corpses", "The Devil's Rejects") and film, television and stage actor-writer-comedian Orson Bean. Their names were, however, featured in the online In Memoriam section of the Academy's website.

Oscar Nominations 2020: The Complete List

The nominations for the 2020 Academy Awards have been announced. The comic book villain origin story "Joker" leads the pack with 11 nominations, followed by "The Irishman", "1917" and "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood" with 10 nods each.

Bong Joon Ho's "Parasite" earned six nominations, including Best Picture, the first ever for a South Korean film.

With the help of "The Irishman", "Marriage Story" (6 nods) and "The Two Popes" (3 nods), Netflix scored a total of 24 nominations.

The 92nd Academy Awards will take place on February 9, 2020, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Just like last year, there will be no host for the ceremony.

Directors Guild Awards 2020 Nominees: Complete List

The nominations for the 2020 Directors Guild of America Awards have been announced. The feature-film directors nominated this year are Sam Mendes ("1917"), Martin Scorsese ("The Irishman"), Bong Joon Ho ("Parasite"), Quentin Tarantino ("Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"), and Taika Waititi ("Jojo Rabbit").

Notable snubs include Todd Phillips ("Joker"), Noah Baumbach ("Marriage Story"), and James Mangold ("Ford v Ferrari").

The TV nominations were delayed and not announced at the same time as the rest of the categories because of a re-vote related to a newly implemented electronic entry submissions process. The DGA also announced that an error was made that resulted in Jill Soloway, a previous DGA award winner for her work on "Transparent", being left off the ballot.

The shows nominated this year are "Game of Thrones", "Watchmen", "Succession", "Barry", "Veep" and "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel". The limited series nominees include "Fosse/Verdon", "Chernobyl", "When They See Us", and "El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie"

The DGA Awards will be handed out Saturday, January 25, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

PGA Awards Nominees 2020 (Complete List)

The Producers Guild of America has announced the nominations for the 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards. Theatrical Motion Pictures nominees include "1917", "Joker", "Knives Out", "Marriage Story", "The Irishman", "Once upon a Time in Hollywood" and "Parasite". In the television category we find the usual suspects like "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", "Succession", "The Crown", "Fleabag" and "Barry", but also the new HBO show "Watchmen", the only freshman series nominated.

PGA winners will be announced at the Producers Guild Awards ceremony on January 18th.

BAFTA Film Awards 2020 Nominations: The Complete List

The nominations for the 2020 British Academy of Film and Television's awards have been announced. "Joker" leads the pack with 11 nominations, followed by "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" and "The Irishman" with 10 nods apiece. Sam Mendes' WWI epic "1917", which recently won big at the Golden Globes, scored nine.

The BAFTAs have included a new category this year for Best Casting, the first introduced by the Academy in two decades. The films nominated in this category are "Joker", "Marriage Story", "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", "The Personal History of David Copperfield" and "The Two Popes".

The 73rd BAFTA Film Awards will take place at London's iconic Royal Albert Hall on Sunday, February 2nd, and the ceremony will be hosted by talk show personality Graham Norton.

Golden Globes 2020 Winners: The Complete List

The Golden Globes turned out to be a more interesting show this year. Ricky Gervais' return as host went down as expected with lots of sharp stabs at Hollywood and the privileged elites, PC culture, recent scandals and celebrities using awards shows as political platforms. I'll be honest, I would pay money to watch Gervais host the Oscars, but I guess that will never happen. Kudos to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for bringing him back for another go.

As for the awards themselves, there were a few surprises. Perhaps the most unexpected was that the WWI drama "1917" won Best Picture - Drama and Best Director (Sam Mendes), propelling it ahead of Scorsese's "The Irishman" in this awards season. Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" scored three big wins for Best Picture - Musical or Comedy, Best Screenplay (Tarantino) and Supporting Actor (Brad Pitt).

In the acting categories, Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor - Drama for his incredible performance in "Joker", and Renee Zellweger won Best Actress for playing the iconic Judy Garland in the biopic "Judy". Laura Dern helped "Marriage Story" bring home its only trophy out of six nominations with a Supporting Actress win.

In the television categories, "Succession" scored two wins for Best Drama Series and Actor (Brian Cox), "Chernobyl" won Limited Series and Supporting Actor (Stellan Skarsgard), and "Fleabag" took home awards for Comedy Series and Actress - Musical or Comedy (Phoebe Waller-Bridge).

SAG Awards 2020 Nominations: The Complete List

The nominations for the 26th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced Wednesday morning. In the film categories, the major contenders are Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman", and Jay Roach's "Bombshell" with 4 nods a piece. The Korean satire "Parasite" was nominated for best ensemble, becoming only the second foreign-language film to earn a best cast SAG Awards nomination.

On the TV side, last year's comedy winner, Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" leads the pack with four nominations. Meanwhile, "Fleabag", "The Crown", "Stranger Things", "The Morning Show" and "The Kominsky Method" scored three nods each.

Overall Netflix came out on top with 20 nods, including seven for motion pictures, followed by HBO with 10 nominations and Amazon with seven.

Robert De Niro will receive a Life Achievement Award for his work on screen and humanitarian accomplishments.

The 26th annual SAG Awards will air live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Golden Globes 2020: The Complete Nominations List

The nominations for the 77th Golden Globes have been announced, and if you've been following the awards buzz so far, there are few surprises here. Films like "Joker", "The Irishman", "1917", "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" and "Marriage Story" have received a great deal of attention with Best Picture and Best Director nods. Netflix dominates this year's Golden Globes with 34 nominations across the movie and television categories.

Overall, Noah Baumbach's "Marriage Story" leads the pack with six nominations, followed by Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman" and Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" tied with five each.

In the television categories, "Chernobyl", Unbelievable" and "The Crown" lead with four each, while "Barry", "Succession", "Big Little Lies", "Fleabag", "Fosse/Verdon", "The Kominsky Method" and "The Morning Show" scored three nods a piece.

The Golden Globe awards winners will be revealed on January 5 live from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, and the show will once again be hosted by Ricky Gervais.

In Theaters: BLACK AND BLUE, COUNTDOWN and THE CURRENT WAR (Director's Cut)

It look like it's going to be a slow weekend at the box-office, with just three low profile wide and semi-wide releases. The cop thriller "Black and Blue" opened in 2,062 theaters to a pretty negative reception from critics and moviegoers. The film, which stars Naomi Harris and Tyrese Gibson, has raked in $675,000 from Thursday previews and will probably finish the weekend with around $6 million.

Another new release is the micro-budget horror film "Countdown", which has also been mauled by critics. Moviegoers aren't particularly enjoying it either, with CinemaScore giving it a terrible "C+" grade based on their opening night polls. "Countdown" brought in $515,000 from previews and will probabil score a $7-8 million opening weekend from 2,675 theaters.

Meanwhile, "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil", "Joker" and "Zombieland: Double Tap" are in a tight race in the Top 3.

The semi-wide release I mentioned above is the biopic "The Current War", which is being released in its Director's Cut form in 1,022 theaters. The film was initially scheduled for release in 2017, but ended up getting shelved after Harvey Weinstein got into trouble and his company went belly-up. Despite being an improvement on the film's original cut, it's still far from a masterpiece, receiveing a mixed reception from critics and audiences. It's box-office prospects are also limited with expectations for a $2 million debut this weekend.

In other news, Robert Eggers' new horror film "The Lighthouse" starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe has expanded nationwide (578 new locations). Coming back this weekend are Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" (1,674 locations) with 10 extra minutes of footage, and the Guillermo Del Toro-produced horror film "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" (1,567 locations).

It wasn't a record-breaking weekend, but at least there's some improvement. Disney's "The Lion King" is still king and close to reaching the $1 billion milestone, while Tarantino scored his best ever debut with "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood".

In Theaters: ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, SKIN and THE MOUNTAIN

Quentin Tarantino's highly anticipated period epic "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" is now in theaters and while it doesn't stand a chance at overthrowing Disney's "The Lion King", it has a great shot at securing a solid second place finish at the weekend box-office. It has already grossed $5.8 million from Thursday previews and it could end up with a $35-40 million debut. It helps that it has received a very enthusiastic reception from both critics and audiences.

In limited release it might be worth checking out the drama "The Mountain" starring Jeff Goldblum and Tye Sheridan, and the biopic "Skin" starring Jamie Bell.

Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio Join Quentin Tarantino's ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD

Quentin Tarantino's new project, the controversial Charles Manson murders film titled "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", just added two big names to its cast. Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio are set to star in the filmmaker's ninth film, which he describes as "a story that takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood. The two lead characters are Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), former star of a western TV series, and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor ... Sharon Tate."

The cast also includes Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate, Roman Polanski's wife who was brutally murdered in her home, along with four others who were visiting at the time, by members of Charles Manson's cult. Tate was eight-and-a-half months pregnant. Tarantino also said: "I've been working working on this script for five years, as well as living in Los Angeles County most of my life, including in 1969, when I was seven years old. I’m very excited to tell this story of an LA and a Hollywood that don’t exist anymore. And I couldn’t be happier about the dynamic teaming of DiCaprio & Pitt as Rick & Cliff."

This is a reunion for Tarantino, Pitt and DiCaprio. The director has worked with Pitt on the WWII flick "Inglourious Basterds", while DiCaprio starred as a villainous slave owner in Tarantino's "Django Unchained". Pitt just finished work on James Gray's science fiction thriller "Ad Astra".

"Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" was acquired by Sony Pictures after Tarantino quit his deal with The Weinstein Company in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations leveled against the company. The film is scheduled for release on August 9, 2019.
