weekend-box-office-spider-man-far-from-home-holds-second-weekend

As expected, "Spider-Man: Far From Home" and "Toy Story 4" continue to dominate the box-office. Meanwhile, Sony and Disney's attempts at counterprogamming, the new releases "Crawl" and "Stuber", performed according to expectations, but failed to make a strong impression.

in-theaters-stuber-crawl-the-farewell-the-art-of-self-defense

With "Spider-Man: Far From Home" and "Toy Story" ready to dominate the box-office once again, this weekend we find studios offering a bit of counterprogramming. The first new film is Disney's release of Fox's R-rated action comedy "Stuber" starring Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani, which brought in $750,000 from previews, and is expected to end the weekend with around $7 million from 3,050 theaters.

The other new wide release is the R-rated alligator horror film "Crawl" directed by Alexandre Aja ("The Hills Have Eyes") and produced by Sam Raimi ("Evil Dead", "Spider-Man"). The film raked in $1 million from Thursday night previews, and it could bring in as much as $13 million in its opening weekend from 3,1701 theaters.

In limited release we have some interesting choices, like the dramedy "The Farewell" starring Awkwafina, and the offbeat dark comedy "The Art of Self-Defense" starring Jesse Eisenberg, Alessandro Nivola and Imogen Poots.

"Stuber" is an action comedy directed by Michael Dowse ("Goon") from a screenplay by Tripper Clancy, who also penned the script for Wolfgang Petersen's 2016 crime comedy "Vier gegen die Bank".

The film follows an LAPD detective (Dave Bautista) and his Uber driver (Kumail Nanjiani) as they drive around town hot on the trail of a dangerous drug lord (Iko Uwais). Mira Sorvino, Natalie Morales, Betty Gilpin, Jimmy Tatro, Karen Gillan and Steve Howey co-star.

"Stuber" premiered at South by Southwest in March, and was released in theaters on July 12, 2019. The film has received mixed reviews from critics. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios as a result of the studio's acquisition of Fox assets. It is the first R-rated film distributed by Disney since the 2013 WikiLeaks biopic "The Fifth Estate".
