New on Blu-ray: DOWNTON ABBEY - The Complete Series

Product Description: Enjoy all six seasons of the multi-award-winning hit series in this special edition box set, which offers all the highs and lows, joy and sorrow, that Downton Abbey viewers across the globe have grown to love. Featuring all 52 episodes and over 11 hours of bonus features, this is the collection for the most ardent Downton fan. Splendor and romance, desire and heartbreak, scandal and rumors…spanning the idyllic pre-war era through the storms of The Great War and beyond to the roaring 1920s, Downton Abbey tells the story of a complicated community. Home to the Crawley family for generations, it is also where their servants live, plan and dream, and they are as fiercely jealous of their rank as anyone. Some of them are loyal to the family and committed to Downton as a way of life, others are moving through, on the lookout for betterment or love or just adventure. The difference is that they know so many of the secrets of the family, while the family know so few of theirs. But for all the passions that rage beneath the surface, this is a secure and ordered world that seems, at first glance, as if it will last forever. Little do they know, family or staff, that the tides of change will not leave Downton unscathed.

Universal scored another #1 release with their new animated film "Abominable", which wasn't really that hard to achieve as the week's only new wide release. Meanwhile the Top 10 is mostly dominated by recent releases and one surprise, the limited release of the Judy Garland biopic "Judy", which delivered a surprisingly solid performance.

The 2019 British period drama "Downton Abbey" is a sequel to the television series of the same name created by Julian Fellowes. Directed by TV helmer Michael Engler ("Sex and the City", "30 Rock") from a script by Fellowes, the film is set in 1927 and continues the story of the Crawley family and their intrepid staff, who must now prepare for the most important moment of their lives: a royal visit from the King and Queen of England.

The film stars Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Maggie Smith, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Joanne Froggatt, Matthew Goode, Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Penelope Wilton and Imelda Staunton.

"Downton Abbey" opened in theaters on September 20, 2019 in the U.S., and on September 13, 2019. In the U.S. it opened in first place at the box-office, beating the Brad Pitt sci-fi film "Ad Astra" and Sylvester Stallone's fifth Rambo film "Rambo: Last Blood".

weekend-box-office-downton-abbey-ad-astra-rambo-last-blood

I wouldn't exactly call it a surprise, but it is quite amazing how a small budget period drama like "Downton Abbey" managed to dwarf  both a testosterone-fueled franchise flick like "Rambo: Last Blood" and a big budget sci-fi Brad Pitt starrer like "Ad Astra". These latter two films both met their expectations, low as they may be, but they are currently in a tight race for second place.

in-theaters-ad-astra-rambo-last-blood-downton-abbey-villains

The new releases this week look like solid contenders for the top spot, even against a still-strong "It: Chapter Two". The first new film, the sci-fi adventure drama "Ad Astra" starring Brad Pitt has been receveing strong buzz from critics, but it looks like audiences are mixed about it ("B-" grade from CinemaScore's polls). Regardless, the film has delivered $1.5 million from previews on Thursday night, on par with "Arrival", and could finish its opening weekend with around $19 million from 3,460 theaters.

Then there's Sylvester Stallone's final chapter in the Rambo franchise, the R-rated action thriller "Rambo: Last Blood", a film that reinforces the divide between critics and audiences, as the former disliked it, while the latter seem to enjoy it ("B" grade from CinemaScore). "Last Blood" brought in $1.3 million from previews and could end up with as much as $20 million from 3,618 theaters.

But the weekend's real star seems to be "Downton Abbey", the feature film sequel to the hit TV show of the same name. Beloved by both critics and moviegoers ("A" grade from CinemaScore), the film grossed $2.1 million from Thursday night previews, and pundits expect this one to debut with an estimated $22 million from 3,079 theaters.

In limited release it might be worth checking out the horror comedy "Villains" starring Bill Skarsgard, Maika Monroe, Kyra Sedgwick and Jeffrey Donovan.
