Weekend Box-Office: ANGEL HAS FALLEN Tops Labor Day Weekend

At the end of the summer season, the Gerard Butler action flick "Angel Has Fallen" dominated the box-office over a Labor Day weekend with no new wide releases. It was an overall dull weekend, but most films generally experienced softer drops after increasing the theater count.

Gerard Butler proves he's still got it as his latest action flick, the threequel "Angel Has Fallen" has topped the box-office charts this weekend. The faith-based sports drama "Overcomer" overperformed, but the horror film "Ready or Not" fell on the low end of expectations.

Weekend Box-Office: GOOD BOYS Tops the Charts While Other Newcomers Bomb

Universal just scored its third straight #1 weekend with the R-rated comedy "Good Boys", surpassing the studio's "Hobbs & Shaw". The film also dominated the other newcomers, which included the animated sequel "The Angry Birds Movie 2", the shark thriller sequel "47 Meters Down: Uncaged", the British dramedy "Blinded by the Light", and the Cate Blanchett-starrer "Where'd You Go, Bernadette".

Weekend Box-Office: SCARY STORIES Tops Newcomers With $20.8M Debut While HOBBS & SHAW Holds at #1

It was a busy weekend with no less than five new wide releases competing against an already strong batch of contenders. While "Hobbs & Shaw" still leads the charts, the PG-13 thriller "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" managed a stronger-than-expected debut. The family adventure film "Dora and the Lost City of Gold" slightly underperformed, while the dramedy "The Art of Racing in the Rain", and the crime drama "The Kitchen" failed to impress audiences. The true story drama "Brian Banks" didn't make The Top 10.

In Theaters: HOBBS & SHAW, LUCE, THE NIGHTINGALE and THEM THAT FOLLOW

This weekend, a non-Disney movie is taking a shot at the box-office crown. Universal's "Hobbs & Shaw", a spinoff of the studio's highly lucrative "Fast & Furious" franchise, is now in theaters and it has already raked in $5.8 million from Thursday previews. The film is expected to end the weekend with around $60 million from 4,253 theaters, which means it could easily surpass Disney's "The Lion King", which should dip below $40 million in its third weekend, and Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood".

We also have some interesting movies opening in limited release. The first is the psychological drama "Luce" starring Kevin Harrison Jr., Naomi Watts, Tim Roth and Octavia Spencer. Other interesting releases are the Australian period thriller "The Nightingale", and the thriller "Them That Follow" that stars Olivia Colman ("The Favourite"), Kaitlyn Dever ("Booksmart") and Walton Goggins ("Justified").

"Hobbs & Shaw" is a spinoff of the "Fast & Furious" franchise centered around main franchise characters Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham).

Directed by David Leitch ("John Wick") from a script by franchise veteran scribe Chris Morgan and Drew Pearce ("Iron Man 3"), the film follows Hobbs and Shaw as they join forces once again to take on a genetically enhanced villain (Idris Elba) who threatens the future of humanity. Vanessa Kirby, Helen Mirren, Eiza Gonzalez and Eddie Marsan co-star.

"Hobbs & Shaw" opened in theaters on August 2, 2019.
