box-office-captain-marvel-tops-second-weekend

Disney and Marvel's "Captain Marvel" dominated the box-office in its second weekend, but newcomers "Wonder Park" and "Five Feet Apart" still managed to perform better than expected. Not all newcomers did well, however. The sci-fi flick "Captive State" struggled with its semi-wide debut.

new-trailers-captive-state-wonder-park-nancy-drew-five-feet-apart

This weekend we have three new wide releases, but don't expect things to get ultra-competitive. The first is the sci-fi thriller "Captive State" directed by Rupert Wyatt, which was initially expected to be a limited release, and has now opened in 2,500 theaters. Nobody knows how much this one will make, but it will probably open below $10 million.

Next we have Paramount's animated film "Wonder Park", which is a major wide release with 3,838 locations, but expectations are reserved with pundits predicting a $10+ million debut. And finally, there's the romantic drama "Five Feet Apart" starring Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse, which might rake in around $10 million from 2,803 theaters.

"Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase" starring Sophia Lillis ("IT") is also out in select theaters this weekend.

The film was directed by Dylan Brown, who was fired before completing the film following accusations of "inappropriate and unwanted conduct". No replacement was hired because the film was nearly complete at the time. The screenplay was written by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec .

The voice cast features Brianna Denski, Ken Hudson Campbell, Jennifer Garner, Matthew Broderick, Kenan Thompson, Ken Jeong, Mila Kunis, John Oliver, Norbert Leo Butz and Kathie Soucie. A TV series based on the film is set to debut this year on Nickelodeon.
