BOSCH Star Titus Welliver to Star in MGM+ Series THE WESTIES

"Bosch" star Titus Welliver is set to star in a new eight-episode crime drama series titled "The Westies", which is in developement at MGM+. The show also stars J.K. Simmons. Production will begin in July in Toronto.

Co-created by Chris Brancato ("Narcos: Mexico", "Godfather of Harlem") and Michael Panes, "The Westies" is set in the early 1980s when the construction of the Jacob Javitz Convention Center on the Westies' home turf in Hell's Kitchen promises a financial windfall for the Irish-American organized crime gang. Despite being outnumbered 50-to-1 by the Five Families of the Italian mafia, The Westies' legendary brutality and cunning have given them the leverage necessary to share the spoils through a fragile detente. But internal conflict between the brash younger generation and the old-school leadership threatens to set a match to this powder keg, which will sweep the Westies into the FBI's ever-deepening investigation into the Italian mafia.

Welliver will star as Glenn Keenan, a troubled NYPD officer who grew up with the Westies crew, torn between loyalty to the law and love for his wayward son. Simmons will play Eamon Sweeney, the charismatic but ruthless leader of The Westies.

Welliver can next be seen in the indie film "Ricky", which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

Maggie Q to Star as Renée Ballard in BOSCH Spinoff Series

"Live Free or Die Hard" and "Nikita" actress Maggie Q has signed on to star in Prime Video's upcoming untitled "Bosch" spinoff series. This is the first show in the franchise based on Michael Connelly's books that will not be led by Titus Welliver.

The show follows Detective Renée Ballard (Q), who is tasked with running the LAPD's new cold-case unit — a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with the largest case load in the city. Ballard approaches these frozen-in-time cases with empathy and determination. When she uncovers a larger conspiracy during her investigations, she'll lean on the assistance of her retired ally, Harry Bosch (Welliver), to navigate the dangers that threaten both her unit and her life.

The Renée Ballard character has not appeared on either "Bosch" or "Bosch: Legacy", and is based on Det. Mitzi Roberts from the LAPD. Ballard and Maggie Q share similar background — both were born and raised in Hawaii.

Connelly's Renée Ballard series consists of six books. The character was introduced in 2017's "The Late Show", named after the night shift that Ballard works. The other books in the series are "Dark Sacred Night" (2018), "The Night Fire" (2019), "The Dark Hours" (2021), and "Desert Star" (2022). A new book, titled "The Waiting" will be released on November 5.

The 2019 action comedy "Shaft" is a sequel to the 2000 film of the same name, which in turn was a reboot of the iconic 1970s franchise that starred Richard Roundtree as private detective John Shaft.

Directed by Tim Story ("Ride Along", "Barbershop"), the film stars Jessie T. Usher as John "JJ" Shaft III, and FBI agent who joins forces with his father, private investigator John Shaft Jr (Samuel L. Jackson), and his grandfather, retired PI John Shaft (Richard Roundtree), to solve the murder of JJ's best friend. Regina Hall, Alexandra Shipp, Matt Lauria, Method Man and Titus Welliver co-star.

"Shaft" opened in theaters on June 14, 2019 and received mostly mixed reviews from critics.

Meanwhile, he must deal with a new murder case that leads to a organized opioid pill ring.
