"The Summer Hikaru Died" is a new anime serries based on the manga series written and illustrated by Mokumokuren, which is serialized on Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace Up web imprint since August 2021, releasing six volumes in Japan to date.
Ryohei Takeshita ("Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night") directs at studio CygamesPictures and serves as series composer, while Yuichi Takahashi ("Vivy -Fluorite Eye's Song-") serves as character designer and chief animation director and Masanobu Hiraoka serves as "Dorodoro" animator ("Chainsaw Man") episode director). The opening theme song is "Saikai" ("Reunion") by Vaundy, while the ending theme song is "Anata wa Kaibutsu" ("You Are My Monster") by Tooboe.
The voice cast includes Shūichirō Umeda, Chiaki Kobayashim, Yumiri Hanamori, Wakana Kowaka, Chikahiro Kobayashi, Yoshiki Nakajima and Shion Wakayama.
"The Summer Hikaru Died" premiered on July 5, 2025 on Netflix globally, while Abema is streaming it in Japan for free.
