Weekend Box-Office: THE DARK TOWER Crumbles With $19M Debut

The box-office slowed down a bit this weekend, with pundits estimating this to have been the weakest box-office weekend since April. In this context, "The Dark Tower", the latest Stephen King adaptation, failed to impress. Same scenario was applied to Kathryn Bigelow's "Detroit". Meanwhile, the thriller "Kidnap" starring Halle Berry scored a decent debut.

GIRLS TRIP Trailers, Clips, Featurette, Images and Posters

Directed by Malcolm D. Lee ("The Best Man", "Undercover Brother" ) and produced by Will Packer ("Ride Along", "Think Like a Man"), the comedy "Girls Trip" follows four lifelong friends, played by Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall, Queen Latifah and Tiffany Haddish, who travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Music Festival with one objective in mind: to party like it's 1999.

The film also stars Larenz Tate, Kate Walsh, Mike Colter, Lara Grice and Kofi Siriboe.

"Girls Trip" opened in theaters on July 21st, 2017 and received mostly positive reviews from critics, who offered praise for the film's strong cast and the writer and director's ability to milk the comic premise for all it's worth. Many critics compared it to Paul Feig's "Bridesmaids", but in a good way.

The film was also a surprise hit at the box-office. It opened with $31.2 million, behind only Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk", and has grossed $65.1 million in 10 days. And it only cost $19 million to produce.

Weekend Box-Office: DUNKIRK Holds Off ATOMIC BLONDE and EMOJI MOVIE

The weekend battle ended with Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" once again conquering the box-office charts, while new arrivals "Atomic Blonde" and "The Emoji Movie" simply couldn't rally enough moviegoers to make a dent.

Weekend Box-Office: DUNKIRK and GIRLS TRIP Deliver Strong Debuts While VALERIAN Flops

Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" made a strong impression in its opening weekend, particularly for a non-franchise World War II movie, and the R-rated comedy "Girls Trip" proved a worthy adversary. Luc Besson's sci-fi epic "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets", however, proved to be a huge disappointment.
