The third installment in the "John Wick" saga, subtitled "Parabellum", is now in theaters and intends to give "Avengers: Endgame" a run for its money. Starring Keanu Reeves and Halle Berry, the threequel already brought in $5.9 million from Thursday night previews from 3,000 locations, more than double what "John Wick: Chapter 2" earned from previews in 2017, and the film is expected to finish its opening weekend with around $48 million. Also, the extremely positive reception from both critics and moviegoers will do wonders for its box-office prospects.
Another sequel was released this weekend, "A Dog's Journey", which is the third film, so far, based on W. Bruce Cameron's canine-centric novels, and a direct sequel to 2017's "A Dog's Purpose". Preview earnings have been pretty slow for this one, with only $275,000 raked in from 2,450 theaters, well behind both its predecessor ($455,000) and this year's "A Dog's Way Home" ($535,000). Pundits expect this one to debut with around $10 million over the weekend. Critics were largely mixed on the movie, while moviegoers liked it well enough.
If saccharine love stories are your thing, and you don't mind a bit of real-life politics mixed in, then you might want to give "The Sun is Also a Star" a try. The teen drama based on the young adult novel of the same name by Nicola Yoon ("Everything, Everything"), received generally mixed reactions from both critics and moviegoers. The film is expected to gross $5 million from over 2,000 theaters in its opening weekend.
In limited release, it might be worth checking out the drama "The Souvenir" written and directed by Joanna Hogg. The film stars Tilda Swinton and her daughter Honor Swinton Byrne, and won the Grand Jury Prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival.
