Mason Thames Joins Donnie Yen's JOHN WICK Spinoff CAINE

Mason Thames ("Black Phone", "How to Train Your Dragon" live-action remake) has signed on to star in Lionsgate's upcoming "John Wick" spinoff "Caine", directed by and starring Hong Kong actor, filmmaker, martial artist, and filmmaker Donnie Yen, who first appeared as the titular blind assassin in "John Wick: Chapter 4". The screenplay is penned by Mattson Tomlin ("The Batman Part II") and Michael McGrale. The film is currently in production.

The cast also includes Dacre Montgomery and Rina Sawayama, who will also reprise her role as Akira. In a statement it was revealed that "Caine" will be "shaped by Yen's signature approach to action filmmaking, blending precision choreography with emotional storytelling, an evolution of the style he pioneered in films such as 'Ip Man', 'Flash Point', and 'Hero'?".

Plot and character details are being kept under wraps, but it has been reported that it will continue Caine's story arc following the events of "John Wick: Chapter 4", as Caine has been freed from his obligations to The High Table.

"Caine" is creatively overseen by "John Wick" franchise producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee via Thunder Road, and helmer Chad Stahelski ("John Wick" 1-4), who produces through his 87Eleven Entertainment production banner. "John Wick" star Keanu Reeves will also produce alongside John Saunders. Yen and Courtney Brock executive produce.

Thames recently finished work on "How to Train Your Dragon 2", and can next be seen starring in the coming-of-age road comedy "Nimrods", and Macon Blair's "Idiots".

BALLERINA (2025) - Trailers, Clips, Featurettes, Images and Posters

"Ballerina" is an action thriller directed by Len Wiseman ("Live Free or Die Hard", "Underworld") from a script by Shay Hatten ("John Wick" Chapter 3 & 4, "Rebel Moon"). The film is a spinoff set in the "John Wick" universe, specifically between the events of Chapter 3 and 4.

The cast includes Ana de Armas, Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Norman Reedus, Anjelica Huston, Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, Robert Maaser, Sooyoung Choi, Anne Parillaud and Keanu Reeves. This is Reddick's final screen appearance. The film opened in theaters on June 6, 2025.

Keanu Reeves To Star In JOHN WICK 5 While Donnie Yen Spinoff And Animated Prequel Also In The Works

Well, that didn't take long! Keanu Reeves is set to return as the vengeful hitman in the upcoming sequel "John Wick 5". The announcement was made by Lionsgate at CinemaCon. In the meantime, the studio is expanding the action franchise with an animated prequel film and a Caine-centric standalone installment starring Donnie Yen ("IP Man", "Rogue One") as the blind assassin. On June 6, 2025 the Ana de Armas spinoff "Ballerina" opens in theaters.

Reeves will also appear in "Ballerina" before reprising the titular role in "John Wick 5". Franchise director and producer Chad Stahelski will also return alongside Thunder Road producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee. No other cast members have been announced and plot details have not been revealed.

The film series started in 2014, with the first "John Wick" grossing $86.1 million worldwide, and becoming a huge hit on home video. The sequels became increasingly more successful with each new iteration: "John Wick: Chapter 2" grossed $174.3 million, "John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum" finished its theatrical run with $328.3 million, and 2023's "John Wick: Chapter 4" topped the franchise with $440 million.

Yen is set to star in his own standalone feature, reprising the role of the blind assassin Caine from "John Wick: Chapter 4". Yen will also direct and executive produce the untitled film, which begins production in Hong Kong later this year. Mattson Tomlin, writer of the upcoming "The Batman Part II" and the adaptation of Keanu Reeves' comic book "BRZRKR", will pen the script based on a previous draft written by Robert Askins. Iwanyk, Lee and Stahelski will produce.

The new standalone spinoff will continue Cain's story arc following the events of "John Wick: Chapter 4", which saw Yen's character freed from his obligations to the High Table. Lionsgate described the new film as "stylistically modeled on the uniquely designed action films that Yen helped make famous". Stahelski described the film as a "modern day kung-fu classic that explores the John Wick world". He also added: "One of my favorite characters in the 'John Wick' world is Caine. To have the chance to dive into his world and discover all his adventures excites us all. And who better to helm it than Donnie Yen himself. His understanding of the culture, the world, and, of course, the action, make him the perfect director for this project.".

Yen had this to say about the spinoff: "The 'John Wick’ films have set an immensely high standard for action filmmaking and I greatly appreciate Lionsgate giving me the opportunity to further elevate the franchise. I am both thrilled and deeply inspired to make this happen".

The animated prequel, which is directed by animation veteran Shannon Tindle ("Ultraman: Rising"), is a story intended for "more mature audiences" and is set before the first film in the series, following Wick's origins as he completes the Impossible Task - the killing of all of his rivals in one night - to free himself from his obligation to the High Table and earn the right to be with the love of his life, Helen. Reeves will lend his voice to his iconic character. The screenplay is penned by Vanessa Taylor ("The Shape of Water", "Divergent", "Hillbilly Elegy"). Iwanyk, Lee, Stahelski and Reeves will also produce the animated prequel. 87Eleven Entertainment's Alex Young and Jason Spitz will executive produce the film.

Stahelski said this about the animated film: "I've always been fascinated with anime. It has always been a huge influence on me, especially with the 'John Wick' series. I feel 'John Wick' is the perfect property for this medium — anime holds the potential to expand our world, our characters, and our action in ways unimaginable before."

JOHN WICK Sequel Series in the Works at Lionsgate Television

The next "John Wick" installment is apparently headed for television, as a followup TV series titled "John Wick: Under the High Table" has been announced by Lionsgate. In development at Lionsgate Television, the show will pick up immediately after the events of "John Wick: Chapter 4". Franchise helmer Chad Stahelski signed a deal with Lionsgate back in January to oversee the expansion of the "John Wick" franchise across all media.

Here is the official synopsis: "John Wick has left the world of the High Table in a tenuous position and a collection of new characters will look to make a name for themselves while some of the franchise stalwart characters remain committed to the old-world order. The series will combine new and old and thrust the Wick universe into a new age".

The series will be executive produced by Keanu Reeves alongside Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road. Stahelski will executive produce via 87Eleven Entertainment and direct the pilot. Robert Levine ("Black Sails") will serve as writer, showrunner, and executive producer on the series.

Should the project find a home, it would be the second TV series set in the world of "John Wick", following Starz's prequel miniseries "The Continental: From the World of John Wick". A fifth film is also in development, while the spinoff film "John Wick Presents: Ballerina" starring Ana de Armas is due to be released in theaters in 2025.

Mel Gibson Joins Cast of John Wick Origin Series THE CONTINENTAL

"Mad Max" and "Lethal Weapon" star Mel Gibson is set to star in "The Continental", a prequel series to the action film series "John Wick", which stars Keanu Reeves. Produced for Starz by Lionsgate Television, the show will be presented as a three-night special-event TV series consisting of three 90-minute movies.

"The Continental" will explore the origin behind the hotel-for-assassins, which increasingly has become the centerpiece of the John Wick universe. This will be accomplished through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott (played by Ian McShane in the movies), who is dragged into the Hell-scape of a 1975 New York City to face a past he thought he'd left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the New York's mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the iconic hotel, which serves as the meeting point for the world's most dangerous criminals.

Gibson is set to play a character named Cormac. This is the actor's first foray into television since making his acting debut on the Australian television drama series "The Sullivans", which ran between 1976 and 1983.

Colin Woodell ("The Flight Attendantd") will star as the young Winston Scott. McShane has previously said he won't appear in The Continental but might do voice-over work, and Lionsgate has said that while Reeves likely won't appear in the series, he's in talks to be an exec producer.

The series will be written by Greg Coolidge ("Ride Along") and Kirk Ward ("Wayne"). They will also serve as showrunners and executive produce. Albert Hughes ("The Book of Eli") will be directing Night One and Night Three, and Charlotte Brandstrom ("The Lord of the Rings") will direct Night Two.

Donnie Yen Joins Keanu Reeves in JOHN WICK 4

"Ip Man" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" star Donnie Yen has joined the cast of Lionsgate's "John Wick 4". The film will be directed by Chad Stahelski from a script by Michael Finch, Shay Hatten and Derek Kolstad.

Yen will play an old friend of Keanu Reeves' titular super assassin, who shares his same history and many of the same enemies. Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Stahelski are producing.

Here's what Stahelski had to say about Yen's casting:

"We are very lucky to have Donnie Yen join the franchise. I am looking forward to working with him in this exciting new role."

The sequel will begin production this summer on location in France, Germany and Japan. The cast also includes Japanese-British pop superstar Rina Sawayama in a lead role, and Shamier Anderson (Netflix's "Awake").

Weekend Box-Office: JOHN WICK 3 Dethrones AVENGERS ENDGAME With $57M Debut

"John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum" dominated the weekend box-office with a better-than-expected debut, while "Avengers: Endgame" took a step back for the first time after 24 days in theaters. The other new arrival, the canine-centric family film "A Dog's Journey", and the teen romance "The Sun is also a Star", performed below expectations.
