A new untitled "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff series has been grenlit at ABC and will premiere during the 2026-2027 broadcast season. The show is co-created, written and executive produced by "Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes alongside Meg Marinis, who has served as showrunner on the flagship series since 2024's Season 20.
The new one-hour series has been described as "an edgy drama about a team at a West Texas rural medical center — the last chance for care before miles of nowhere". It has also been reported that this will be the first "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff not to feature a main cast member from the mothership show.
Marinis said the following in a statement "I am incredibly excited to expand the 'Grey's Anatomy' universe. This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from 'Grey's' for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas. I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it".
"Grey's Anatomy" star and executive producer Ellen Pompeo will also serve as executive producer on the spinoff, alongside longtime Rhimes collaborator Betsy Beers. The spinoff is produced by 20th Television and Shondaland.
This will be the fourth spinoff in the franchise, which also included "Private Practice", which ran for six seasons (2007-2013), "Station 19", which aired for seven seasons (2018-2024), and 2018's six-episode web series "Grey's Anatomy: B-Team".
