"Michael" is making a comeback, as the Michael Jackson biopic climbed back to the top spot at the box office in its fourth weekend. It certainly helped that "The Devil Wears Prada 2" is fading out a little faster than expected, and "Mortal Kombat II" isn't strong enough to provide much competition. Among the new releases, Blumhouse's "Obsession" is an unexpected hit, winning both critics and audiences. Unfortunately, Guy Ritchie's new movie "In the Grey" starring Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza Gonzalez tanked and barely made the Top 10. The revenge drama "Is God Is" also failed to find its audience.

"Michael" once again reigns supreme, exceeding expectations and returning to the #1 position at the box office in its fourth week. The film grossed $26.1 million over the weekend, just 31% down from the previous frame, bringing the domestic total to $282.8 million. Overseas it adds another $423.9 million for a global cume of $706.7 million against a $200 million budget. The movie is now gunning for "Oppenheimer" as the highest grossing biopic ever made.
"The Devil Wears Prada 2" finished its third weekend in second place with $17.8 million. The film suffered a steeper than expected drop, falling 57.1% from last week. Regardless, it's still in a very comfortable position, with $175.7 million on the domestic market, and another 370.3 million from foreign theaters. That's a total of $546 million worldwide against a $100 million budget. Plenty of profit there for Disney.
The newly released horror film "Obsession" opened in third place with a solid $17.1 million from 2,615 theaters. Overseas, it grossed another $7.6 million for a global total of $24.8 million. And it only cost around $1 million to produce. The film received a buzz-worthy reception from critics (95% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers also seemed to enjoy it far more than the usual genre fare ("A-" CinemaScore).
In fourth place, "Mortal Kombat II" isn't doing so great. The sequel dropped 65.2% in its second weekend, raking in $13.4 million. The domestic total is now at $62.2 million. Overseas it only grossed $39 million, which brings its worldwide tally to $101.2 million. With a budget of $80 million, the movie would need around $160 million in order to break even and start turning a profit. It might still be possible, but only if it slows down its week-to-week decline.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the family-friendly murder mystery "The Sheep Detectives" with $9.5 million. The film dropped just 36.5%, but it unfortunately had a slow start. Domestically it has grossed $29.9 million, while internationally it adds another $29 million for a total of $58.9 million worldwide. Sadly, the film cost $75 million to produce, which means that it will definitely lose money.
At #8 we have the 40th anniversary re-release of "Top Gun" alongside its 2022 sequel "Top Gun: Maverick". The re-release has grossed $3.3 milion over the weekend from 2,295 theaters, and $5 million since its release on Wednesday.
Guy Ritchie's "In the Grey" opened in ninth place with $2.9 million from 2,018 theaters. With a budget of around $60 million, the film is another in a long line of box office misfires from the filmmaker. Both the critical and audience receptions were mixed-to-negative (45% on Rotten Tomatoes and "B" CinemaScore).
Another unremarkable debut was that of the revenge drama "Is God Is", which opened in tenth place with $2.2 million from 1,510 theaters. This one enjoyed strong reviews from critics (98%), but a lukewarm reception from moviegoers ("B+" CinemaScore).
