Weekend Box Office Minions And Monsters

Illumination's animated film "Minions & Monsters" conquered the 4th of July weekend, but also severely underperformed. The release of a new family-friendly film clearly impacted "Toy Story 5", which took a steep dive, but still held on well enough to finish in second place. Meanwhile, Angel Studios' historical drama "Young Washington" opened in time for the holiday and scored a decent debut.

Weekend Box Office Supergirl Tanks Toy Story 5 Dominates

James Gunn's new DC cinematic universe has hit a considerable bump with the release of its second film, "Supergirl" starring Milly Alcock. The film stumbled in its opening weekend and will probably end up losing Warner Bros a lot of money. Meanwhile, "Toy Story 5" is still the top movie at the box office despite a considerable drop, while "Jackass: Best and Last", the fifth and supposedly final installment in the series, scored a franchise-low debut.

Weekend Box Office Toy Story 5

Pixar's "Toy Story 5" effortlessly dominated the Juneteenth holiday weekend at the box office with a record-breaking debut. Meanwhile, Spielberg's "Disclosure Day" suffered a severe decline in its sophomore weekend, while "Obsession" and "Backrooms" continue to deliver strong performances. Other new semi-wide releases like "The Death of Robin Hood" and "Leviticus" failed to attract moviegoers.

Curry Barker's New Original Horror Film in the Works at Universal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster
Following the huge success of his horror film "Obsession", Curry Barker's next film is currently in development with Universal Film Group and Blumhouse Atomic Monster. The film will be written, directed and produced by Barker, and it has been described as an original horror concept based on an original idea from the filmmaker's own pitch. Plot details are being kept under wraps. Universal Film Group will handle worldwide distribution.

The film landed at Universal through the filmmaker's relationship with Blumhouse Atomic Monster, Roy Lee and Steven Schneider's Spooky Pictures and Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath's Divide/Conquers. Meanwhile, Barker's "Anything but Ghosts", is currently in post-production for Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Focus Features, which also released "Obsession".

"Anything but Ghosts" is directed by and co-stars Barker, who also co-wrote the script alongside Cooper Tomlinson, who also stars. The cast also includes Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard. The story follows two fraudulent paranormal investigators who are forced to face real ghosts and the lies underpinning their business. Blumhouse Atomic Monster, Spooky Pictures and Divide/Conquer were already on board for "Anything but Ghosts" even before "Obsession" premiered in Toronto. Blumhouse Atomic Monster then joined "Obsession" as an executive producer.

Barker had this to say in a statement: "This film is something I've been excited to make for a while, and I'm thrilled to be reteaming with Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal Film Group for it. They've built the kind of home for bold, original storytelling that every filmmaker dreams of, and I couldn't imagine better collaborators for this film".

NBCUnniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley said the following: "Curry Barker has an exceptional ability to tap into the cultural zeitgeist, pairing an innate instinct for what resonates with audiences with extraordinary filmmaking prowess. Barker's talent is redefining what's possible and we're thrilled to continue our partnership with him"

Blumhouse Atomic Monster's James Wan and Jason Blum added in a joint statement: "With 'Obsession' Curry did what only a handful of filmmakers manage in a generation: he made something wholly original that connected with a massive audience, and that connection is what we care about most. The best filmmakers can work anywhere, and we are proud to have a growing slate with Curry. Getting to put this project in front of the fans his work speaks to is the whole reason we do this".

Weekend Box Office Disclosure Day

Steven Spielberg's new sci-fi thriller "Disclosure Day" dominated the box office with an impressive debut for an original adult-oriented film. Other new releases like the martial arts action film "The Furious", and the spoof comedy "Stop! That! Train!", failed to attract moviegoers. Meanwhile, last week's new releases, "Scary Movie" and "Masters of the Universe" suffered steep drops.

Weekend Box Office Scary Movie 2026

Banking on both nostalgia and the recent revival of spoof comedies, the R-rated parody "Scary Movie", the sixth installment in the iconic franchise, effortlessly dominated the box-office. Meanwhile, another reboot, the big budget fantasy epic "Masters of Universe" fell short of expectations, but still made a somewhat decent debut in second place. "Backrooms" and "Obsession" got pushed back by the new arrivals, but are still making good money, unlike "The Mandalorian And Grogu", which has plummeted for a second consecutive weekend. Another impressive debut was that of the theatrical finale event of viral internet phenomenon "The Amazing Digital Circus".

Weekend Box Office Backrooms Crushes Star Wars

Last week, Disney released "The Mandalorian and Grogu", the first new "Star Wars" movie in over six years, and it topped the box office charts. Just one week later, everyone has already forgotten there's a "Star Wars" movie in theaters. It's the small budget horror films that have captured all the attention.

A24's newly released creepypasta-inspired horror flick "Backrooms" matched the Mandalorian movie's opening, while "Obsession" continues to grow in its third consecutive weekend. Not particularly good news for big studios, but fantastic news for theaters and the future of cinema.

Other new releases like the comedy "The Breadwinner" starring Nate Bargatze, and the historical WWII drama "Pressure" starring Andrew Scott and Brendan Fraser, failed to attract moviegoers.

Weekend Box Office The Mandalorian And Grogu Tops Memorial Day Frame

Disney's new "Star Wars" movie "The Mandalorian and Grogu" dominated the Memorial Day weekend, but it was a massive step down from both past holiday releases and previous installments in the "Star Wars" franchise. Meanwhile, the horror film "Obsession" has turned into a surprise success story, its second weekend surpassing its opening weeekend. Another horror film, the newly released "Passenger" scored a decent debut, but Boots Riley's new film "I Love Boosters" failed to attract moviegoers.

Weekend Box Office Michael Back At No 1

"Michael" is making a comeback, as the Michael Jackson biopic climbed back to the top spot at the box office in its fourth weekend. It certainly helped that "The Devil Wears Prada 2" is fading out a little faster than expected, and "Mortal Kombat II" isn't strong enough to provide much competition. Among the new releases, Blumhouse's "Obsession" is an unexpected hit, winning both critics and audiences. Unfortunately, Guy Ritchie's new movie "In the Grey" starring Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza Gonzalez tanked and barely made the Top 10. The revenge drama "Is God Is" also failed to find its audience.
