Sean Penn to Direct January 6 Movie Starring Bradley Cooper

Sean Penn to Direct January 6 Movie Starring Bradley Cooper
Three-time Oscar winner Sean Penn ("One Battle After Another") will write and direct a drama that follows the life of a cop who gets mixed up in the January 6 Capitol riots in 2021. Oscar nominated actor/filmmaker Bradley Cooper is in talks to star in the lead role.

The film is being developed at Warner Bros. The studio picked up the project in a negative pickup, which is a contract entered into by an independent producer and a movie studio conglomerate wherein the studio agrees to purchase the movie from the producer at a given date and for a fixed sum.

The project has been described as "an unexpected story about friendship" that works on multiple levels. It will be made in collaboration with the real-life subject whose identity is being kept hidden for now. The story focuses on the protagonist's early journey, which led to him later becoming an American hero in the eyes of many.

Production will begin mid-2027, depending on Cooper's commitments on the next Oceans film. Penn will produce alongside John Ira Palmer and John Wildermuth via Projected Picture Works.

Penn attended a January 6 House committee hearing in 2022, describing himself as "just another citizen" who was there to observe. He sat alongside several law enforcement officers who defended the Capitol. Among those he was seen speaking to were Michael Fanone, the former Washington D.C. police officer who was severely injured and beaten on the day. It has been speculated that Fanone is the inspiration for Penn's movie.

Cooper can next be heard in Bong Joon-ho's 2027 animated adventure "Ally", and will also write, direct and star in an "Ocean's Eleven" prequel starring Margot Robbie.
