Weekend Box Office: DISCLOSURE DAY Scores Biggest Opening for a Steven Spielberg Original Film

Weekend Box Office Disclosure Day

Steven Spielberg's new sci-fi thriller "Disclosure Day" dominated the box office with an impressive debut for an original adult-oriented film. Other new releases like the martial arts action film "The Furious", and the spoof comedy "Stop! That! Train!", failed to attract moviegoers. Meanwhile, last week's new releases, "Scary Movie" and "Masters of the Universe" suffered steep drops.

Read more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Disclosure Day" opened with $44.5 million from 3,824 theaters, which is Spielberg's biggest original film debut. It's also ahead of 2018's "Ready Player One", which opened with $41.7 million. The film looks primed to easily cross the $100 million mark, but next week's drop will be very important. Overseas, the film raked in another $49.4 million for a worldwide total debut of $93.9 million. The film cost around $115 million to produce, which is modest by today's blockbuster standards, and it will need around $200-250 million to break even. Critics liked the film (81% on Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences weren't as enthusiastic ("B" CinemaScore).

The year's buzziest movie, "Obsession", climbed from #4 to #2 in its fifth weekend, grossing another $19 million, which is a soft 25.1% drop from last week. The film has now grossed $188.3 million domestically, and another $98.7 million from foreign markets. The worldwide total now stands at $287.1 million against a $750,000 budget.

The sixth "Scary Movie" took a rough tumble in its sophomore weekend, raking in $14.2 million, which is a 73.9% drop. Regardless, it's still a big hit, with a domestic total of $84.2 million, and $88.6 million internationally, which adds up to $172.8 million worldwide against a $30 million budget.

The other highly successful horror film "Backrooms" finished its third weekend in fourth place with $11.5 million. It's a heavy 56.1% drop, but the film had a very strong start, and it's domestic tally is already at $160.2 million, while overseas it adds another $88.4 million for a global cume of $248.7 million against a $10 million budget.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Amazon's "Masters of the Universe", which also suffered a severe 69.7% drop in its sophomore frame, but with a much worse opening weekend. In its second weekend it only grossed $8.9 million, bringing its domestic cume to only $46.9 million. Overseas it raked in $39.4 million, and its worldwide total now stands at $86.3 million against a massive $200 million budget. This one will definitely end up being 2026's biggest bombs.

In other news, the concert film "BTS World Tour 'Arirang' in Busan: Live Viewing" opened in eighth place with 3.8 million from 1,005 theaters. In ninth place, the Hong Kong action film "The Furious" raked in $2.8 million from 1,251 theaters, while the comedy "Stop! That! Train!" tanked in tenth place with $2 million from 1,161 theaters.
