Banking on both nostalgia and the recent revival of spoof comedies, the R-rated parody "Scary Movie", the sixth installment in the iconic franchise, effortlessly dominated the box-office. Meanwhile, another reboot, the big budget fantasy epic "Masters of Universe" fell short of expectations, but still made a somewhat decent debut in second place. "Backrooms" and "Obsession" got pushed back by the new arrivals, but are still making good money, unlike "The Mandalorian And Grogu", which has plummeted for a second consecutive weekend. Another impressive debut was that of the theatrical finale event of viral internet phenomenon "The Amazing Digital Circus".

The sixth "Scary Movie" scored an impressive $54.3 million debut from 3,490 theaters. This would be the biggest opening weekend in the franchise's long history, but adjusted for inflation it ranks as only the fourth highest opening, behind the third film ($49.7 million in 2003 -> $89.9 million in 2026), the first installment ($42.3 million in 2000 -> $81.8 million in 2026), and finally, the fourth "Scary Movie" ($40.2 million in 2006 - $66.4 million in 2026). Overseas, the new film raked in another $50.5 million for a worldwide total of $104.8 million against a $30 million production budget, making it already profitable after its first three days in theaters. However, both the critical and audience reception were pretty bad (24% on Rotten Tomatoes and "C+" CinemaScore), which means it should brace for a nasty fall next week.
Amazon/MGM's "Masters of the Universe" opened in second place with $29.4 million from 3,677 theaters. Not a great start for the $200 million movie, and overseas it only added another $25 million for a total worldwide debut of $54.4 million. The movie would need around $400 million to break even, which I think is pretty much impossible at this point. Both the critical and audience reception have been mixed (67% on Rotten Tomatoes and "B" CinemaScore).
The horror hit "Backrooms" dropped 67.7% in its second weekend and finished in third place with $26.2 million. It's not uncommon for horror films to drop sharply in their sophomore frames, but this one has the advantage of having a great start. In 14 days it has grossed a total of $135.3 million domestically and $77.6 million internationally. That's $212.9 million worldwide against a $10 million budget.
The other horror hit "Obsession" finished its fourth weekend in fourth place with $25.3 milion, a 7.3% decline after showing growth for two consecutive weeks, which is highly unusual, especially for this genre. The film has now grossed $151.9 million in North America, and another $57.2 million from foreign markets. That's a total of $209.1 million worldwide, and it only cost $750,000 to produce.
The Top 5 is rounded out by "The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act", the theatrical release of the show's final two episodes, which opened with $12.3 million from 2,221 theaters. Since its Thursday debut, the film has grossed a total of $20.6 million.
