Disney's new "Star Wars" movie "The Mandalorian and Grogu" dominated the Memorial Day weekend, but it was a massive step down from both past holiday releases and previous installments in the "Star Wars" franchise. Meanwhile, the horror film "Obsession" has turned into a surprise success story, its second weekend surpassing its opening weeekend. Another horror film, the newly released "Passenger" scored a decent debut, but Boots Riley's new film "I Love Boosters" failed to attract moviegoers.

Disney and Lucasfilm's first theatrical "Star Wars" release in nearly seven years, "Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu" opened in 4,300 theaters and secured the top spot at the box office with $81 million over the 3-day weekend and $100 million for the 4-day holiday. This is the lowest box office opening for a "Star Wars" film, even failing to surpass the 2018 flop "Solo: A Star Wars Story" ($103 million). It's also not even in the Top 10 of Memorial Day opening weekends, which ranged between $182.6 million (2025's "Lilo & Stitch") and $103.4 million ("The Hangover Part II"). "Mandalorian and Grogu" grossed another $63 million from foreign markets for a worldwide total of $163 million. The film's budget is estimated at $165 million, although reports seem to indicate it might have been a lot more than that. Regardless, marketing costs were certainly substantial, so the movie would need around $400 million to break even. Next week will be critical to the film's success. The critical reception was mixed (62% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers mostly enjoyed it ("A-" CinemaScore).
In second place we find "Obsession", which opened last week in third place with $17.1 million. Now in its second weekend, the film grossed another $23.9 million, which is a 39% increase. An unusual, but very impressive feat. The 4-day weekend was around $29 million, bringing its domestic total to $60.7 million. Overseas it adds another $7.6 million for a global total of $68.3 million. And the movie only cost $1 million to produce.
The biopic "Michael" dropped from first place to third in its fifth weekend. The film raked in $20.7 million for the 3-day, down 20.8%, and $25 million for the 4-day, bringing its domestic total to $321.1 million. Overseas it adds another $468.1 milion for a global total of $789.2 million against a $200 million budget.
After a steep drop last week, "The Devil Wears Prada 2" slowed down its decline and finished its fourth weekend in fourth place with $12.7 million, down just 28.9%, and $16.5 million for the extended holiday. Its domestic total is now at $200 million, while internationally it adds another $408 million for a worldwide total of $608 million.
Rounding out the Top 5 is "The Sheep Detectives" with $9.2 million for the 3-day frame, which is only a 3.9% drop from last week, and $12.3 million for the 4-day holiday. The film has now grossed a total of $47.3 million in North America, and another $38.8 million from foreign markets. That's a global tally of $86.1 million. Unfortunately, with a $75 million budget and marketing costs, the film needs around $150 million to recoup its costs.
In sixth place we find the first of the new wide releases, the horror film "Passenger", which opened at #6 with $8.7 million from 2,534 theaters for the 3-day, and $10.5 million over the extended holiday frame. Overseas it adds another $4.8 million for a global debut of $15.3 million. With a budget of $15 million, its break-even limit is around $30 million, which I doubt it can reach, especially since it got bad reviews from critics (46% on Rotten Tomatoes), and the audience reception was lukewarm ("B-" CinemaScore).
The other semi-wide release was "I Love Boosters", which made its debut in eighth place with $3.7 million from 1,750 theaters for the 3-day, and $4.5 million for the 4-day holiday. The movie cost around $20 million to produce. It got rave reviews from critics (91% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers weren't impressed ("B" CinemaScore).
