Despite "Mortal Kombat II" scoring a decent opening weekend, "The Devil Wears Prada 2" emerged victorious in this battle of the sequels, and continues to dominate the box office. Overall, it was a pretty good weekend for theaters with previous releases like "Michael" still going strong alongside "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" and "Project Hail Mary". New releases over the weekend include "The Sheep Detectives" starring Hugh Jackman, and the concert film "Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft - The Tour Live in 3D", but both struggled to find their audience.

"The Devil Wears Prada 2" dominated its second weekend in theaters with $41.6 million, down 45.8% from its debut. The film's domestic total is now at $143.4 million, while overseas it adds another $288.4 million for a worldwide total of $431.8 million. The sequel has already beat out the first film's entire theatrical run, and is turning quite a profit against its $100 million budget.
"Mortal Kombat II" opened in second place with $38.5 million from 3,503 theaters. While not a massive success, it's an improvement over the first film's $23.3 million opening weekend, although the 2021 film was heavily affected by the COVID pandemic and Warner Bros' decision to release the film in theaters and on HBO Max at the same time. The sequel also adds another $21.5 million from foreign markets for a global total of $60 million. The first film grossed a total of $84.4 million worldwide against a $55 million budget. The sequel cost $80 million to produce, so it would need $160-200 million to break even. Both the critical and audience reception were mixed (65% on Rotten Tomatoes and "B" CinemaScore).
In third place we find the biopic "Michael", which is still performing exceptionally well. The film grossed another $37.9 million in its third weekend, down just 30.3% from the previous frame. The film has now grossed a total of $241.8 million domestically and $339.1 milion internationally. That's a worldwide total of $581 million against a $200 million budget.
The family-friendly flick "The Sheep Detectives" made its debut in fourth place with $15 million from 3,457 theaters. Overseas it raked in another $11.9 million. That's a global total of only $27 million against a $75 million budget. This one has "flop" written all over it, but with an enthusiastic reception from both critics (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A-" CinemaScore), there might be some hope of at least softening its decline in the next few weeks.
The 3D concert film "Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft - The Tour Live in 3D" didn't do so well, either, opening in fifth place with just $7 million from 2,613 theaters. International markets only added another $12.6 million for a global total of $19.6 million. The film cost $20 million to produce, so it would need around $40 million to start turning a profit. Critical and audience reception was positive (94% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A" CinemaScore).
