Weekend Box Office: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU Tops Memorial Day Frame

Disney's new "Star Wars" movie "The Mandalorian and Grogu" dominated the Memorial Day weekend, but it was a massive step down from both past holiday releases and previous installments in the "Star Wars" franchise. Meanwhile, the horror film "Obsession" has turned into a surprise success story, its second weekend surpassing its opening weeekend. Another horror film, the newly released "Passenger" scored a decent debut, but Boots Riley's new film "I Love Boosters" failed to attract moviegoers.

Weekend Box Office: DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 Beats Out MORTAL KOMBAT II

Despite "Mortal Kombat II" scoring a decent opening weekend, "The Devil Wears Prada 2" emerged victorious in this battle of the sequels, and continues to dominate the box office. Overall, it was a pretty good weekend for theaters with previous releases like "Michael" still going strong alongside "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" and "Project Hail Mary". New releases over the weekend include "The Sheep Detectives" starring Hugh Jackman, and the concert film "Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft - The Tour Live in 3D", but both struggled to find their audience.

"The Sheep Detectives" is a mystery comedy directed by Kyle Bailda ("Despicable Me 3", "Minions") from a script by Craig Mazin ("Chernobyl", "The Last of Us") based on Leonie Swann's 2005 novel "Three Bags Full". The cast includes Hugh Jackman, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau, and Emma Thompson, and the voices Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O'Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, and Brett Goldstein. The film was released in theaters on May 8, 2026.
