"The Devil Wears Prada 2" stormed the box office over the weekend, taking down last week's #1 film "Michael", which is still going strong alongside "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" and "Project Hail Mary", effectively shutting out any other new releases from the top spots. The newly released horror film "Hokum" was the only new semi-wide release to perform well enough, while Angel Studios' "Animal Farm" and Renny Harlin's "Deep Water" tanked.

"The Devil Wears Prada 2" opened in first place with $76.7 million from 4,150 theaters, a massive uptick from the original film's $27.5 million debut in 2006, which would amount to around $45 million adjusted for inflation. The first film ended its theatrical run with $124 million domestically and another $201.8 million internationally, but the sequel is aiming much higher than that. It has already raked in $156.6 million from overseas markets, bringing its worldwide debut to $233 million already. The film received a positive reception from both critics and moviegoers (78% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A-" CinemaScore).
"Michael" dropped to second place in its second weekend and grossed another $54.4 million, a soft 44% decline from its massive debut. The film's domestic total has reached $184.2 million, while internationally it adds another $246 million for a global total of $430.2 million.
"The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" finished its fifth weekend in third place with $12.1 million, down 41.2% from the previous frame. Domestic total is at $402.6 million, and the international at $495.5 million, adding up to $897.2 million worldwide.
In fourth place we find "Project Hail Mary" with $8.5 million, down just 33.7% in its seventh weekend. The film's domestic total has reached $318.3 million, whiile overseas it raked in $320.1 million. The worldwide tally is at $638.4 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the first new release, the horror film "Hokum", which opened with $6.4 million from 1,885 theaters. Not a bad start, especially since the film only cost $5 million to produce. The film received a positive reception from critics (87% on Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences were somewhat less enthusiastic ("B" CinemaScore). However, that audience score is better than the genre usually gets, so this one might have some word-of-mouth supporting it next week.
Angel Studios' animated comedy "Animal Farm" directed by Andy Serkis, failed to attract moviegoers, and made its debut in sixth place with $3.3 million from 2,600 theaters. While its $35 million budget is extremely modest compared to other animated films, it will end up losing a lot of money. The movie was a disaster with both critics (24% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegers ("C-" CinemaScore).
The last of the new semi-wide releases, the survival thriller "Deep Water" opened with a weak $2.1 million from 1,675 theaters. However, the movie was surprisingly well received by critics (72% on Rotten Tomatoes), as well as audiences ("B" CinemaScore). Unfortunately, the movie cost $40 million to produce, and even with some positive word-of-mouth, I can't see this one as anything but a bomb.
Also released in theaters over the weekend was the anime film "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea", which raked in $9347,325 from 837 theaters. Overseas it grossed a total of $4.2 million.
