Weekend Box Office Minions And Monsters

Illumination's animated film "Minions & Monsters" conquered the 4th of July weekend, but also severely underperformed. The release of a new family-friendly film clearly impacted "Toy Story 5", which took a steep dive, but still held on well enough to finish in second place. Meanwhile, Angel Studios' historical drama "Young Washington" opened in time for the holiday and scored a decent debut.

Weekend Box Office Supergirl Tanks Toy Story 5 Dominates

James Gunn's new DC cinematic universe has hit a considerable bump with the release of its second film, "Supergirl" starring Milly Alcock. The film stumbled in its opening weekend and will probably end up losing Warner Bros a lot of money. Meanwhile, "Toy Story 5" is still the top movie at the box office despite a considerable drop, while "Jackass: Best and Last", the fifth and supposedly final installment in the series, scored a franchise-low debut.

Jason Momoa To Play Lobo In Supergirl Woman Of Tomorrow

"Aquaman" star Jason Momoa is set to rejoin the DC Comics universe, this time as Lobo in "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow". The actor was rumored to be attached to the Lobo role since before James Gunn came aboard to reboot the DC cinematic universe alongside Peter Safran, and has been vocal about his interest in the part.

Today, Momoa has confirmed his attachment to the role in a post on Instagram: "I collect comics, and I don't do so much anymore, but was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I'm like, 'Hello? It's the perfect role'". Alongside the Instagram screenshot, Momoa posted a caption this morning that reads: "They called."

Created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, Lobo is often depicted as a bounty hunter with superhuman strength and regenerative abilities who enjoys chaos and destruction, an antihero known for his violent and irreverent personality, who hails from the planet Czarnia. He was first introduced in Omega Men #3 in June 1983.

Plot details for the "Supergirl" movie are under wraps. Milly Alcock ("House of the Dragon") was cast in the lead role and Matthias Schoenaerts is on board as villain Krem of the Yellow Hill. Eve Ridley also recently joined the cast as Ruthye Mary Knolle.

The film is directed by Craig Gillespie ("I, Tonya", "Dumb Money") from a script by Ana Nogueira based on Tom King's 2022 comic book series "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow". Gunn and Safran will produce, with Chantal Nong executive producing. Production is expected to start on January 13th, 2025.

Momoa can next be seen in "A Minecraft Movie", which opens on April 4, 2025, and the live-action/animated "Animal Friends" from Legendary. He will also appear in "Fast X: Part 2", the Apple miniseries "Chief of War", and Amazon MGM's "The Wrecking Crew" opposite Dave Bautista.

Matthias Schoenaerts To Play Villain In Supergirl Movie

"Rust and Bone" and "The Old Guard" actor Matthias Schoenaerts is in final negotiations to star as the villain in DC Studios' "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow". The movie is based on Tom King's 2022 comic book series illustrated by Bilquis Evely. Craig Gillespie ("I, Tonya", "Cruella") will direct from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira ("Hightown", "The Vampire Diaries").

Schoenaerts' role was not officially named, but the villain from the comic book is Krem of the Yellow Hill, who kills a young alien girl's father and draws Supergirl into the conflict. "House of the Dragon" star Milly Alcock will star in the title role, and she's also appearing in another DC project before making her big-screen debut as Supergirl.

The film is part of the "Gods and Monsters" Phase 1 of James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Extended Universe. "Supergirl" will begin production in January in the UK and will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026. In 2025 we will get to watch "Superman" starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Gunn and Safran are producing. DC EVP Chantal Nong is executive producing.

Gunn said the following in January: "We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he's an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip off of Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life"

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Star Milly Alcock Is DC's New SUPERGIRL
DC Comics has cast Milly Alcock ("House of the Dragon") as the new superhero protagonist for their upcoming movie "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow", which is based on the comics run of the same name by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.

No director has been officially attached to the project, but we do know that Ana Nogueira ("The Vampire Diaries) was hired to write the script. No details are known about this film, but pundits expect Supergirl to first appear in James Gunn's "Superman: Legacy", since the casting announcement was made before Gunn starts shooting that movie.

In the 2022 comic book run of "Woman of Tomorrow", Kara aka Supergirl grows up witnessing Krypton's destruction until she's 14, when she arrives on Earth. Gunn explained in 2023 when presenting the first 10 titles in the new DCU slate: "She's not exactly the Supergirl we're used to seeing".
