Ray Romano Picture

Ray Romano ("Everybody Loves Raymond", "Running Point", "The Irishman") has signed on to lead the upcoming HBO Max drama series pilot "How to Survive Without Me", which hails from writers and executive producers Greg Berlanti and Bash Doran, from a story by Berlanti, Doran and Robbie Rogers. The latter is also producing alongside Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman via Berlanti Productions and its overall deal with studio Warner Bros. Television.

Here is the official synopsis: "In the wake of matriarch Beverly's passing, the De Angelis family have begun to drift, unsure how to manage their complicated, evolving lives without her guidance, but in true Beverly fashion, she found a way to keep running the show from the beyond. Should they wish to experience Beverly's final work, the family must find the time — and make the effort — to remain connected, and be there for each other through all of life's challenges yet to come…"

Romano stars as Leo, newly a widower and suddenly performing the lead role of parent that he never auditioned for. As his five, complicated adult children begin to navigate life without their mother at the center, Leo is forced to find his own voice as a parent, moving out of wife's shadow to become the family's new, differently effective center.

Sarah Aubrey, head of Max Original Programming said this in a statement: "We are so excited to work with Ray on ‘How to Survive Without Me'. The show harkens back to the kinds of aspirational family dramas that Greg does so well, a grounded narrative centered around navigating love, loss, and a one-of-a-kind family. It's a project designed to return year after year, continually deepening the audience's connection to these beloved characters and their unique story."

Clancy Collins White, president of creative affairs for Warner Bros. Television added: "Ray is a beloved icon who has an incredible gift for bringing both depth and levity to every character he portrays. We're thrilled to welcome him to 'How to Survive Without Me' as Leo, the patriarch woven into this deeply moving family story. We know his performance will bring nuance and heart to Greg and Bash’s vision, and form a powerful emotional connection with viewers."

Scooby Doo Live Action Series Netflix

A "Scooby-Doo" live-action series is officially moving forward at Netflix. The streamer has picked up the series, which has been in development since April 2024, for eight episodes. The series will delve into the origins of Mystery Inc. and the iconic Great Dane.

"Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" scribes Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as writers and showrunners and will also executive produce along with André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner under their Midnight Radio banner. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman will executive produce via Berlanti productions. Warner Bros. Television will produce. Berlanti Productions is currently under an overall deal at WBTV, with the studio controlling the rights to the Hanna-Barbera characters.

Here is the show's official logline "During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets".

Berlanti said the following: "One of my first and favorite jobs in Hollywood was sitting with Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera while they signed animation cells. Josh and Scott and everyone at Midnight Radio have crafted a story that captures their amazing spirits and their genius creation. We are grateful to them and everyone at Warners and Netflix for the partnership in helping bring this iteration of Scooby-Doo to life!"

This isn't the first time Scooby-Doo was adapted for live-action. The first time was in a movie released in 2002 that starred Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini, with Neil Fanning voicing Scooby. The film was a box office success, grossing over $250 million worldwide. It was followed by a 2004 sequel with the same cast, "Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed" as well as a live-action TV film "Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins" in 2009, which got its own sequel in 2010.
