"A Wrinkle in Time" is a new Disney live-action film directed by
Ava DuVernay (
"Selma") from script by
Jennifer Lee (
"Frozen") and
Jeff Stockwell (
"The Ottoman Lieutenant"), based on
Madeleine L'Engle's
novel of the same name.
The story follows Meg Murry (
Storm Reid), a middle school student whose scientist father (
Chris Pine) suddenly disappears. With the help of three astral travelers, played by
Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey and
Mindy Kaling, Meg discovers that her father is held captive on a distant planet, and embarks on a fantastical adventure along with her younger brother (
Deric McCabe) and a fellow student (
Levi Miller) to free him from the universe-spanning evil that is holding him captive.
The film also stars
Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Pena, Andre Holland, Rowan Blanchard, David Oyelowo and
Bellamy Young
"A Wrinkle in Time" opened in theaters on March 9, 2018. The film received mixed to negative reviews. While critics were appreciative of the film's ambition and universal themes, they disliked the muddled narrative and CGI overload. It failed to impress in its first weekend in theaters, grossing $33.3 million against a $100 million budget.
