Weekend Box Office: MERCY Takes Down AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH

The sci-fi thriller "Mercy" succeeded in securing the #1 position at the box-office, dethroning "Avatar: Fire and Ash" after five consecutive weeks at the top, but overall, it wasn't a great weekend for new releases. Even the #1 movie is a bonafide flop, while the other new wide release, the horror sequel "Return to Silent Hill" also tanked.

"Mercy" is a sci-fi action thriller directed by Timur Bekmambetov ("Wanted", "Searching") from a script by Marco van Belle. The film stars Chris Pratt, Rebecca Ferguson, Kali Reis, Annabelle Wallis, Chris Sullivan, and Kylie Rogers. It opened in theaters on January 23, 2026.

• The psychological thriller "No Other Choice" from Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook ("Oldboy", "Decision to Leave") based on Donald Westlake's 1997 novel "The Ax", which was previously turned into a 2005 French film by Costa-Gavras. Chris Pratt Reteams With Timur Bekmambetov For Sci-Fi Thriller MERCY

Chris Pratt has signed on to star in Amazon MGM Studios' upcoming sci-fi thriller "Mercy". The film will be directed by Timur Bekmambetov from a script by Marco van Belle ("Arthur & Merlin"). Bekmambetov previously worked with Pratt on the 2008 movie "Wanted", which was based on Mark Millar's comic book

The film is set in the near future when capital crime has increased, and it follows a detective (Pratt) who is accused of a violent crime and forced to prove his innocence.

The film is produced by Charles Roven, who just received his second Best Picture Oscar nomination for "Oppenheimer", under his Atlas Entertainment. Bekmambetov is also on board to produce through his production company BEL.
