Weekend Box-Office: CRAZY RICH ASIANS Impresses; MILE 22 and ALPHA Struggle

The comedy "Crazy Rich Asians" topped the box-office charts over the weekend, scoring another consecutive hit for Warner Bros. Meanwhile, the other new releases, the action thriller "Mile 22", and the Ice Ace adventure flick "Alpha" both struggled.

MILE 22 Trailers, TV Spots, Clips, Featurettes, Images and Posters

Director Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg re-team once more for the action thriller "Mile 22". They have previously collaborated on "Lone Survivor", "Deepwater Horizon" and "Patriots Day".

Designed as the first installment in a planned trilogy and multi-media franchise, the film follows an elite CIA operative (Wahlberg), who must retrieve and extract an asset (Iko Uwais) who holds life-threatening information, with the help of a top-secret tactical command unit. The cast also includes Lauren Cohan, Ronda Rousey, John Malkovich, Terry Kinney, Natasha Goubskaya and Sam Medina . A sequel is already in early stages of development.

"Mile 22" opened in theaters on August 17, 2018 and received mostly negative reviews from critics. The film brought in $1 million from Thursday night previews, and is expected to open with around $16 million over the weekend.

In Theaters: CRAZY RICH ASIANS, MILE 22, ALPHA and THE WIFE

The romantic comedy "Crazy Rich Asians" is making its debut in theaters this weekend. The film is very well received by critics and moviegoers, and Warner Bros. is expecting a $29 million five-day opening from 3,300 theaters, but don't be surprised if the final numbers will be even bigger.

Another new release, the action thriller "Mile 22" starring Mark Wahlberg is looking to pave the way for a new franchise, but critics have been pretty harsh, and audiences seem to agree.

Other new releases include the Ice Age adventure flm "Alpha" starring Kodi Smit-McPhee , and the drama "The Wife" starring Glenn Close. The latter will debut in select theaters.

Mark Wahlberg and Ronda Rousey Join Action Film MILE 22

Mark Wahlberg and UFC fighter turned actress Ronda Rousey will team up for director Peter Berg's new action movie "Mile 22". This would be the third collaboration between Wahlberg and Berg after "Lone Survivor" and the upcoming fact-based drama "Deepwater Horizon".

Wahlberg and Rousey will be joined by Iko Uwais, who is famous for starring in the martial-arts movies "The Raid: Redemption" and its sequel, "The Raid 2: Berandal".

The script has been written by Graham Roland and focuses on a CIA agent (Wahlberg) stationed in Indonesia who is assigned to transport a compromised informant from the center of a city to a getaway plane at an airport 22 miles away. If you think this is the perfect set-up for a hellish ride, you are correct. On their way to the plane they will have to fight corrupt cops, criminal overlords and heavily armed locals.

"Mile 22" will be produced by Berg alongside Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson ("Prisoners"). Berg and Wahlberg are also involved in the remake of "The Six Billion Dollar Man".
