THE ROOKIE Spinoff Starring Jay Ellis Gets ABC Pilot Order

A new spinoff of the ABC series "The Rookie" is officially moving forward with a pilot order. The show, which is titled "The Rookie: North", has been in development since December 2024, and it stars Jay Ellis ("Insecure", "Running Point", "Top Gun: Maverick") in the lead role. "The Rookie" creator Alexi Hawley will write, executive produce, and direct the pilot.

Here is the show's official synopsis: "Alex Holland (Ellis) believed his mid-life wasn’t worthy of a crisis. But after a violent home invasion ignites a dormant purpose, Alex battles a lifetime of failed commitments by joining the Pierce County Police Department as its oldest rookie. Policing from the urban coast to the rural forest where backup isn’t just 5-minutes away, Alex must prove to his skeptical training officer, his fellow rookies, and himself, that he’s finally found something worthy of the fight."

Nathan Fillion will also executive produce alongside Ellis, Mark Gordon, Bill Norcross, and Michelle Chapman. Lionsgate Television and 20th Television will produce.

"The Rookie" was renewed for an eighth season earlier this year, which will premiere on January 6, 2026. The first spinoff of the mothership series was "The Rookie: Feds" starring Niecy Nash-Betts, which ended up getting cancelled after one season in 2023.

Ellis can next be seen in Mindy Kaling's Hulu comedy series "Not Suitable for Work".

New THE ROOKIE Spinoff In The Works At ABC

The hit procedural series "The Rookie" is about to spawn a second spinoff show. ABC, Lionsgate Television and 20th Television are in early development on the new series, which will be written by "The Rookie" creator Alexi Hawley, who was given a blind script commitment by the network earlier this year.

The spinoff is set in Washington state and it follows a male cop who is stepping into a new phase of life in his second act. Hawley is executive producing the new series alongside "The Rookie" star/executive producer Nathan Fillion and executive producers Bill Norcross, whose real-life story inspired the original series, and Michelle Chapman. Lionsgate Television will co-produce with 20th Television.

The seventh season of "The Rookie" is set to premiere on January 7, 2025. The other spinoff, "The Rookie: Feds" was cancelled after one season. That show was led by Emmy winner Niecy Nash-Betts as Simone Clark, the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy.

Hawley is also the creator and executive producer of Lionsgate TV's Netflix series "The Recruit", starring Noah Centineo, which is returning for a second season on January 30th.

The Rookie" is a new crime procedural series created by "Castle" writer and one-time showrunner Alexi Hawley (brother of "Fargo" and "Legion" creator Noah Hawley) for ABC. Nathan Fillion stars as John Nolan, a 40-year-old man living in a small town who gives up his comfortable life to move to Los Angeles and become a police officer for the Los Angeles Police Department. The cast also includes Afton Williamson, Eric Winter, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O'Neil, Titus Makin, Alyssa Diaz and Mercedes Mason.

The Rookie" premieres on ABC tonight, October 16, 2018 at 10p. The show received a straight-to-series order without a pilot last October. The critical reception, so far, has been mostly mixed-to-positive.
