"Pacific Rim: Uprising" is a sequel to Guillermo del Toro's 2013 sci-fi actioner "Pacific Rim" that envisioned an epic battle between the Kaiju, giant monsters that arrived on Earth through an inter-dimensional breach that had opened at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, and humans aided by giant robots called Jaegers.

Co-written and directed by Steven S. DeKnight ("Spartacus: Blood and Sand"), the sequel finds humanity and a new generation of Jaeger pilots on the verge of another conflict with the Kaiju. The cast features John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Tian Jing, Ivanna Sakhno, Lily Ji, Karan Brar, Adria Arjona and Mackenyu.

"Pacific Rim: Uprising" opened in theaters on March 23, 2018 and received mixed reviews from critics. It opened with $28 million at the domestic box-office and $122.5 million overseas.

The sci-fi sequel "Pacific Rim: Uprising" managed to take down "Black Panther", but Disney's behemoth still walked away with plenty of money over the weekend. Meanwhile, the other new arrival, "Sherlock Gnomes", struggled to find an audience. Smaller releases "Paul, Apostle of Christ" and "Midnight Sun" managed to land in the Top 10 in spite of the heavy competition.

John Boyega
It's been a difficult journey so far for the follow-up to Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim". I had a bad feeling about the project when I heard that del Toro wouldn't direct, and I still don't feel inspired by his replacement, Steven S. DeKnight, creator of the "Spartacus" series and showrunner of the "Daredevil" series' first season.

Personal ranting aside, the sequel titled "Pacific Rim: Maelstrom" is at least moving forward. The latest announcement is the casting of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" star John Boyega. He will be playing the son of Idris Elba's character, Stacker Pentecost, from the first film. There is no word regarding the return of the original's leads, Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi.

Here is the official press release announcing Boyega's casting:
"Legendary Pictures has tapped John Boyega, one of today’s most talented rising stars, the lead role for the second installment of its PACIFIC RIM franchise. The film, which is targeting a 4th Quarter start date is rapidly taking shape as a key project on Legendary’s upcoming slate with Boyega playing the son of Idris Elba’s character from the original film.

The project will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight based on the world created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham. Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni, and del Toro will produce the action adventure film along with Boyega and Femi Oguns under their Upper Room Productions shingle. Cale Boyter will serve as the film’s executive producer.

“It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men,” said Mary Parent, Legendary’s Vice Chairman of Worldwide Production.

“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job,” stated del Toro.

John Boyega’s previous credits include STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and ATTACK THE BLOCK. His upcoming projects include STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII, THE CIRCLE opposite Tom Hanks and Emma Watson, IMPERIAL DREAMS, WATERSHIP DOWN alongside James McAvoy and Sir Ben Kingsley, and he will star on stage next year in WOYZECK at The Old Vic. He is represented by WME and Identity Agency Group in the UK and Hansen Jacobson.

The film will be distributed by Universal Pictures around the world with the exception of China."

pacific-rim-2-star-trek-3-updates

Guillermo del Toro Picture
Two sci-fi sequels are moving forward and we have some new updates to talk about. First, we have a release date for "Pacific Rim 2" and some interesting details. The sequel to last year's robots versus monsters blockbuster was not exactly a sure thing. While the film grossed $411 million worldwide, it only managed to take in $101 million domestically, which isn't very impressive. But, the franchise has some decent potential, so Guillermo del Toro is now hard at work writing the sequel's script with Zak Penn ("X2"), and the finished product is expected to hit theaters on April 7, 2017, in IMAX 3D. The filmmaker also revealed that in the meantime we can look forward to an animated series that will extend the "Pacific Rim" universe. Also, it seems that the sequel will be released by Universal Studios, who have taken over distribution duties from Warner Bros.

Roberto Orci Picture
As for "Star Trek 3", we have the first update regarding the plot and where the crew of the USS Enterprise is headed next in 2016. The film will be directed by franchise writer Roberto Orci, after J.J. Abrams left to work on "Star Wars: Episode VII", and here is what he had to say about the plot:
"In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space."

Pacific Rim on DVD and Blu-Ray

PACIFIC RIM

Rated: PG-13 | Runtime: 131 min | Studio: Warner Home Video

Pacific Rim Blu-Ray DVD
Synopsis: When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse

Although it didn't seem likely, the Adam Sandler comedy "Grown Ups 2" managed to overtake Guillermo del Toro's highly publicized sci-fi actioner "Pacific Rim" at the box-office. The sequel was universally panned by critics, but managed to open at #2 with $42M. The giant robots versus giant monsters flick only managed to place third with $38M despite encouraging Thursday midnight showings of about $3.6M. "Pacific Rim" is in a bit of tough spot considering its $190M budget. "Grown Ups 2" also cost quite a bit, aprox. $80M, but it's off to a good start, a bit better than the first film's $40M opening weekend. And what's more important, the first film went on to gross $162M domestically and $271M worldwide.

Now, to return to what's really important: the top spot. The highest grossing film this weekend is the animated sequel "Despicable Me 2", which earned $44.7M in the current three-day timeframe, which adds up to a total of $229M domestically and $472M worldwide (in 12 days). The sequel is definitely going to overtake the first film, which grossed $251M domestically and $543M worldwide (in 196 days).

Meanwhile, the Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy comedy "The Heat" continues to do good business, grossing $14M this weekend and adding up to a total of $112M. Disney's misfire "The Lone Ranger" continues to drop at an alarming rate, losing over 60% of its initial opening weekend (down to $11M). The Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer starrer has only managed to rake in $119M worldwide in 12 days versus a bloated $215M budget. Joining Disney in the financial heartache is Roland Emmerich's action thriller "White House Down" which never recovered from an equally catastrophic opening weekend. The Channing Tatum & Jamie Foxx team-up only managed to gross $82M worldwide in 17 days versus a $150M budget. By comparison, the latter might actually be less of a disaster than Disney's flop.

Pacific Rim Rinko Kikuchi

A new featurette and banner poster for Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" have been released. In the featurette, del Toro explains how the sets for the Jaeger cockpits were conceived and built. It's truly impressive. I personally thought that there was more CGI used for those cockpits, but apparently I was wrong. They are fully operational mechanical sets that look awesome. The banner poster is a composite of leading actors Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Idris Elba, and the Jaeger robots in the background. The film also stars Charlie Day and Ron Perlman. The release date is July 12, 2013.
