Weekend Box Office: KRAVEN THE HUNTER and WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM Flopped

The weekend's only new wide releases, the comic book movie "Kraven the Hunter" and the anime "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" both tanked in spectacular fashion. Meanwhile, "Moana 2" and "Wicked" are still going strong, while "Gladiator II" is slowing down, but still around for the Top 5.

Weekend Box-Office: MOANA 2 Dominates Post-Thanksgiving Frame

"Moana 2", "Wicked" and "Gladiator II" held over from the Thanksgiving frame, and they also helped the overall box-office break the post-Thanksgiving weekend record with a total of $130 million. Previously 2018 was the title holder with $120 million.

Although there were no major new releases, the weekend's Top 10 features the Bollywood action drama "Pushpa: The Rule - Part 2", the re-release of Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar", the anime "Solo Leveling: ReAwakening", and the concert film "For King + Country: A Drummer Boy Christmas - Live". The horror comedy "Y2K" starring Rachel Zegler and Jaedem Martell was also released in theaters but didn't so well.

Weekend Box-Office: MOANA 2, WICKED and GLADIATOR II Fuel Record-Breaking Thanksgiving Frame

Thanks to the historic performance of Disney's new animated sequel "Moana 2", and considerable assistance from the previous weekend's top earners "Wicked" and "Gladiator II", the 2024 Thanksgiving weekend set an all time record with a total gross of $422 million in just five days.

Weekend Box Office: WICKED AND GLADIATOR II Score Record-Breaking Openings

"Wicked" soared at the weekend box office and triumphed over "Gladiator II", but the latter was no slouch either, securing a hefty debut. Overall, "Glicked" drove the North American box office towards a 79% improvement over the pre-Thanksgiving frame last year when "The Hunger Games: Blalad of Songbirds" opened with $115.5 million.

Weekend Box-Office: RED ONE Dominates With Modest $32 Million Debut

Dwayne Johnson's very expensive Christmas action comedy "Red One" topped the box-office charts and ended "Venom: The Last Dance"'s three-week reign, but failed to impress despite being the weekend's only new wide release. Overall, earnings were down over 36% compared to the same frame last year which saw the release of "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" in theaters.

"Red One" is a Christmas action adventure film directed by Jake Kasdan ("Bad Teacher", "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle") from a script by Chris Morgan ("Fast & Furious"). The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, J.K. Simmons, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju and Kiernan Shipka. The film opened in theaters on November 15, 2024.

Dwayne Johnson to Star in Action Adventure Movie RED ONE for Amazon Studios

Dwayne Johnson is set to reunite with "Fast & Furious" scribe Chris Morgan for Amazon's holiday action adventure comedy "Red One". Amazon won the project after a highly competitive bidding war.

The film is currently scheduled to shoot in 2022 with a planned 2023 holiday release. Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia will produce the film on behalf of Seven Bucks Productions. Morgan will write the screenplay and produce.

Amazon will look to exploit the property across multiple ancillaries in addition to being a tentpole film.

Here's what Johnson had to say about the project:

"Hold my Mana, because this is exciting. Our Seven Bucks is very bullish on our partnership with Amazon Studios; underpinned with some innovation, some pioneering and a lot of positive energy and passion. I've been very impressed with Jen Salke and her team's vision and ambition to create an enormous, fun and unique Red One holiday universe for families around the world to enjoy."

Producer Hiram Garcia said the following in a statement:

"Red One is incredibly special to me and a story I’ve wanted to tell for years,” added Hiram Garcia. “An epic, edge-of- your seat, action adventure that takes beloved holiday mythology and turns it on its head.
