Weekend Box-Office: WICKED FOR GOOD Scores Record-Breaking $147 Million Debut

The sequel "Wicked: For Good" soared over the weekend with a record-breaking box office debut that was pretty much devastating for all the other contenders, including newcomers "Rental Family" and "Sisu: Road to Revenge", which failed to attract moviegoers. The upcoming Thanksgiving frame will add Disney's "Zootopia 2" into the mix, which will make for a pretty interesting weekend at the box office.

WICKED: FOR GOOD (2025) - Trailers, Clips, Featurettes, Images and Posters

"Wicked: For Good" is the second part of the 2024 fantasy musical film "Wicked". Director Jon M. Chu returned to helm the new film from a script by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox based on the second act of the 2003 stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Holzman, which in turn was loosely based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel of the same name that reimagined L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz".

The cast includes Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Colman Domingo, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum. The film opened in theaters on November 21, 2025.

• The last chapter in Jon M. Chu's epic fantasy musical "Wicked". Titled "Wicked: For Good" the film stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande alongside Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Marissa Bode and Ethan Slater.
• Netflix's South Korean apocalyptic disaster thriller "The Great Flood" directed by Kim Byung-woo and starring Kim Da-mi and Park Hae-soo.
• "After the Hunt", the acclaimed new film from filmmaker Luca Guadagnino ("Challengers", "Suspiria", "Call Me By Your Name"). The film stars Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri, Michael Stuhlbarg and Chloe Sevigny.
• The prohibition-era monster horror film "The Bride!" written, directed, and produced by Maggie Gyllenhaal based on the 1935 film "Bride of Frankenstein". The cast includes Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz.
• Hulu's "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle", a remake of the classic 1992 thriller of the same name. The updated version is directed by Michelle Garza Cervera ("Huesera: The Bone Woman") and it stars Miaka Monroe, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Riki Lindhome, Raul Castillo and Martin Starr.
• The murder mystery thriller "Murder at the Embassy" starring Mischa Barton, Mido Hamada, Kojo Attah, Nell Barlow, Raha Rahbari, Antonia Bernath and Richard Dillane.

Oscars 2025 Winners - The Complete List

Sean Baker's "Anora" won big at the 97th Academy Awards, scoring five trophies: Best Picture, Director, Actress (Mikey Madison), Original Screenplay and Editing. Baker took home four of those five awards, tying Walt Disney's Oscar record for most individual wins in one year, although Baker won all of his Oscars for one film, while Disney won for four different movies in 1954: "The Living Desert" (Best Documentary Feature), "The Alaskan Eskimo" (Best Documentary - Short Subject), "Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom" (Best Short Subject - Cartoon), and "Bear Country" (Best Short Subject - Two-Reel).

Adrien Brody took Best Actor for A24's "The Brutalist", and Zoe Saldana and Kieran Culkin won in the Supporting categories for Emilia Perez" and "A Real Pain", respectively. "Conclave" only scored a win for Adapted Screenplay (Peter Straughan"). "Dune: Part Two" won two awards for Best Sound and Visual Effects, while "Wicked" took home two trophies for Costume and Production Design.

Critics Choice Awards 2025 Winners - The Complete List

The winners of the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards have been announced on Friday night. "Anora" won the Best Picture award, but lost in the other six categories it was nominated for. "Wicked" director Jon M. Chu won Best Director (he isn't nominated at the Academy Awards).

Demi Moore scored the Best Actress award for her performance in "The Substance", while Adrien Brody was named Best Actor for "The Brutalist". Supporting awards went to Zoe Saldana ("Emilia Perez") and Kieran Culkin ("A Real Pain").

In the television categories, "Shogun" dominated with four wins including Drama Series, but the only award it didn't take was Best Actress in a Drama, where Kathy Bates landed a win for the CBS show "Matlock". "Hacks" scored three wins, for Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, as well as Comedy Series.

Colin Farrell won for Best Actor in a Limited Series for his performance in "The Penguin", while his co-star Cristin Milioti won Best Actress. The Best Limited Series award went to Netflix's "Baby Reindeer", which also won for Jessica Gunning's supporting performance.

Writers Guild Awards 2025 Nominations - The Complete List

The nominees for the 77th annual Writers Guild Awards have been revealed, and among the feature films nominated for top honors are "Anora", "Challengers", "A Complete Unknown", "Nickel Boys", "Civil War", "Dune: Part Two" and "Wicked".

Due to the WGA's eligibility rules, films like "Conclave", "Emilia Pérez", "I'm Still Here", "Inside Out 2", "The Room Next Door", "Sing Sing" and "The Wild Robot" were ruled out in the Adapted race, while in the Original Screenplay category, films like "A Different Man", "The Brutalist", "His Three Daughters", "The Substance" and "Hard Truths" were deemed ineligible.

For television, the top contenders include "The Bear", "Abbott Elementary", "Hacks", "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "What We Do in the Shadows" for the Comedy categories, while "The Boys", "The Diplomat", "Fallout", "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", "Fallout" and "Shōgun" will compete for Drama trophies.

The winners will be announced on February 15th during concurrent ceremonies in New York at the Edison Ballroom and Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton.

BAFTA 2025 Film Nominations - The Complete List

The nominations for the 2025 BAFTA Film awards have been announced in London this morning. The Vatican thriller "Conclave" leads the pack with 12 nominations, while the crime musical "Emilia Pérez" is close behind with 11 nods. Both films will complete with "The Brutalist", "Anora", and "A Complete Unknown" for Best Film.

Brady Corbet's epic drama "The Brutalist" landed nine nominations, while "Anora", "Dune: Part Two" and "Wicked" are tied with seven nods. "A Complete Unknown" and the Irish biographical comedy "Kneecap" scored six nominations each.

This year the BAFTAs introduced a new "Children's And Family Film" category. The Nominees are "Flow", "Kensuke's Kingdom", "Wallace And Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl" and "The Wild Robot".

The ceremony will take place on February 16th at London's Royal Festival Hall. "Doctor Who" star David Tennant will return to host.

The nominations for the 2025 SAG Awards were revealed. The group's scheduled in-person announcement was canceled due to the wildfire tragedy in Los Angeles. The film ensemble category nominees include "A Complete Unknown", "Anora", "Conclave", "Emilia Pérez" and "Wicked".

The lead actor contenders include Adrien Brody ("The Brutalist"), Timothée Chalamet ("A Complete Unknown"), Daniel Craig ("Queer"), Colman Domingo ("Sing Sing") and Ralph Fiennes ("Conclave"). The nominees for lead female actor are Pamela Anderson ("The Last Showgirl"), Cynthia Erivo ("Wicked"), Karla Sofía Gascón ("Emilia Pérez"), Mikey Madison ("Anora") and Demi Moore ("The Substance").

In the television categories, the nominees for Ensemble in a Drama Series are "Bridgerton", "The Day of the Jackal", "The Diplomat", "Shōgun" and "Slow Horses". The Comedy Series contenders include "Abbott Elementary", "The Bear", "Hacks", "Only Murders in the Building" and "Shrinking".

Jane Fonda will receive the SAG Life Achievement Award.

The winners of the 31st annual SAG Awards will be announced on February 23rd at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be hosted by Kristen Bell and will stream live on Netflix.

Weekend Box Office: MUFASA Dominates First Frame Of 2025 With SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 Close Behind

Disney's animated prequel "Mufasa: The Lion King" conquered the first box office weekend of 2025, while "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" is still hot on its heels in second place. With no other new releases, the Top 10 features the same movies, with very few changes.

Weekend Box Office: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 Defeats MUFASA In Pre-Holiday Frame

"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" and "Mufasa: The Lion King" battled it out over the weekend, but the former ended up conquering the pre-holiday frame by far, while Disney's prequel failed to impress. Meanwhile, the faith-based post-apocalyptic drama "Homestead" broke into the Top 5.

Weekend Box-Office: MOANA 2 Dominates Post-Thanksgiving Frame

"Moana 2", "Wicked" and "Gladiator II" held over from the Thanksgiving frame, and they also helped the overall box-office break the post-Thanksgiving weekend record with a total of $130 million. Previously 2018 was the title holder with $120 million.

Although there were no major new releases, the weekend's Top 10 features the Bollywood action drama "Pushpa: The Rule - Part 2", the re-release of Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar", the anime "Solo Leveling: ReAwakening", and the concert film "For King + Country: A Drummer Boy Christmas - Live". The horror comedy "Y2K" starring Rachel Zegler and Jaedem Martell was also released in theaters but didn't so well.

Golden Globe 2025 Nominations - The Complete List

The Golden Globes' 2025 nominations have been announced. The top contender is Jacques Audiard's "Emilia Pérez" with 10 nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (Karla Sofia Gascon), and Best Director – Motion Picture (Audiard).

Other highlights include "Conclave" with six nods, "The Substance" with five, and "Challengers" with four nominations. "Wicked" also scored four, including nominations for Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

Meanwhile, in the television categories, "The Bear" leads with five nominations, including Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, followed by "The Penguin" with three, "Only Murders in the Building" with four, and "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" with three nominations.

The 2025 Golden Globes will air on January 5th, 2025.
