Weekend Box Office: Mel Gibson's FLIGHT RISK Gives Lionsgate Its Second #1 Movie In 2025

The thriller "Flight Risk" directed by Mel Gibson and starring Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Dockery and Topher Grace, landed in first place, already giving Lionsgate a second #1 opener this year. Meanwhile, Steven Soderbergh's supernatural thriller "Presence" didn't make much of an impression, while Angel Studios' new wide release "Brave the Dark" failed to make it into the Top 10.

Weekend Box Office: WOLF MAN Mauled By MUFASA and ONE OF THEM DAYS Over MLK Frame

"Mufasa" still reigns over the box office and dominated the MLK holiday weekend, but it came close to losing that top spot to the newly released comedy "One of Them Days" starring Keke Palmer and SZA. The other new wide release, the Blumhouse horror film "Wolf Man" didn't do so well, finishing behind the two previously mentioned films.

Weekend Box Office: DEN OF THIEVES 2 Takes Down MUFASA

The heist action thriller sequel "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera" has overtaken both "Mufasa: The Lion King" and "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" to become Lionsgate's first #1 movie in over a year, thus breaking the studio's cold streak.

Disney's animated prequel "Mufasa: The Lion King" conquered the first box office weekend of 2025, while "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" is still hot on its heels in second place. With no other new releases, the Top 10 features the same movies, with very few changes.

Weekend Box Office: MUFASA Beats SONIC 3 Over Christmas Frame While NOSFERATU Sets Record Breaking Debut

"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" and "Mufasa: The Lion King" dominated the Christmas box office and went toe to toe, but the Disney prequel ended up coming out on top over the 5-day weekend, while the video game movie topped the 3-day frame. Robert Eggers' horror remake "Nosferatu" pulled off a pleasant surprise. Meanwhile the Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown" scored a solid debut, while the sports drama "The Fire Inside" failed to attract moviegoers.

"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" and "Mufasa: The Lion King" battled it out over the weekend, but the former ended up conquering the pre-holiday frame by far, while Disney's prequel failed to impress. Meanwhile, the faith-based post-apocalyptic drama "Homestead" broke into the Top 5.

Keanu Reeves to Voice Shadow in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3

Keanu Reeves has been confirmed as the voice of Shadow in "Sonic the Hedgehog 3". In the games, Shadow, an anthropomorphic hedgehog with black fur, is often an antagonist to Sonic, but eventually becomes an ally. The character is a creation of Professor Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of Sonic's arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik. His superpower is the ability to control time and sapce.

The cast also includes Ben Schwartz as Sonic, James Marsden as Sheriff Tom Wachowski, and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. Jeff Fowler is returning as the director of the new installment. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara and Hitoshi Okuno will produce. The release date has been set for December 20, 2024.

Reeves is set to appear in the "John Wick" spinoff titled "Ballerina" opposite Ana de Armas. He is also set to co-star in "Good Fortune" alongside Aziz Ansari, Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer and Sandra Oh.

Jim Carrey Returning for SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3

Despite previously suggesting that he will retire from acting, it has now been confirmed that Jim Carrey will reprise the role of Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming sequel "Sonic the Hedgehog 3". The movie is already in production, and the villain will be back in action after seemingly falling to his death in the previous installment.

Franchise helmer Jeff Fowler is returning as the director on the latest sequel. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara and Hitoshi Okuno will produce the film. The release date has been set for December 20, 2024.

The "Sonic the Hedgehog" movie series has proven to be very profitable, both films grossing a total of $870.8 million. A spin-off series titled "Knuckles" is currently in the works for Paramount+.
