This week in theaters we have the sci-fi comedy "Pixels" which rounded up some pretty bad reviews and joined a long line of films starring Adam Sandler to receive a good thrashing from critics. Then there's the teen romantic drama "Paper Towns" which is based on a novel by John Green. And if you're looking for something a little grittier, there is the boxing drama "Southpaw" starring Jake Gyllenhaal in one of his best roles. For horror fans, the exorcism flick "The Vatican Tapes" begins a limited run in theaters. More about each movie after the jump.

Southpaw Movie Clips and Featurette

Eight new clips and three featurettes for Antoine Fuqua's boxing drama "Southpaw" have been released. The film opens today in theaters and has been getting mostly mixed reviews. Critics have taken issue with the genre cliches that Fuqua apparently hasn't managed to keep away from, but Jake Gyllenhaal has been universally praised for his committed performance.

The cast also includes Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Rita Ora, Naomie Harris and Victor Ortiz.

Legendary Composer James Horner Dies in Plane Crash

Academy Award-winning composer James Horner passed away today at the age of 61 in a plane crash near Santa Barbara. According to his assistant, Sylvia Patrycja, Horner was piloting the small aircraft. Patrycja also posted this message on Facebook:
"A great tragedy has struck my family today, and I will not be around for a while. I would like some privacy and time to heal. We have lost an amazing person with a huge heart, and unbelievable talent. He died doing what he loved. Thank you for all your support and love and see you down the road. Love Sylvia."
James Horner
James Horner's first score was composed in the late 1970s for the 1930's gangster film "The Lady in Red", but the first score to earn him proper recognition was the one for "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan" in 1982. From there on his mainstream works included films like "48 Hrs", "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock", "Aliens" (which also earned him his first Academy Award nomination), "An American Tail", "Willow", "Cocoon", "The Land Before Time", "Glory", "Field of Dreams", "The Rocketeer", "Patriot Games", "Braveheart", "Apollo 13", "Titanic", "The Mask of Zorro", "The Perfect Storm", "A Beautiful Mind", "Troy", "Apocalypto", "Avatar", "The Karate Kid" and "The Amazing Spider-Man".

This incredible output earned the composer 10 Oscar nominations and two wins, both for "Titanic" (score and song), as well as 11 Grammy nods and 3 wins. His score for "Titanic" sold over 27 million copies worldwide, becoming the most successful primarily orchestral soundtrack in history.

This year, Horner's last scores can be heard in the films "The 33" and "Southpaw".

R.I.P. James Roy Horner.

New Southpaw Movie Trailer and Posters

A new trailer and two posters for the boxing drama "Southpaw" have been released. The new trailer is much shorter but packs one hell of a punch with a series of intense shots and less plot to slow it down. The posters are also well synced with the gritty tone of the trailer. The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua ("The Equalizer") and it stars Jake Gyllenhaal ("Nightcrawler") as a boxer who fights his way to the top, only to find his life falling apart around him. Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Rita Ora, Naomie Harris and Victor Ortiz also star.

"Southpaw" opens in theaters on July 24th.

The first trailer for the drama "Southpaw" has been released. Directed by Antoine Fuqua ("The Equalizer", "Training Day") from a script by Kurt Sutter ("Sons of Anarchy"), the film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a boxer who fights his way to the top, only to find his life falling apart around him. The trailer reveals quite a lot, but it also sells the movie's intense drama well enough and it looks like Gyllenhaal offers another stellar performance. The film also stars Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Rita Ora, Naomie Harris and Victor Ortiz

"Southpaw" opens in theaters on July 31st.
