Weekend Box-Office: Coronavirus Hits Domestic Box Office; Lowest Level in Over Two Decades

If last week the domestic box-office was relatively unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic, this weekend we're seeing a major impact, with drops between 60-80% for all releases, both old and new, as theater closings continue to rise. The total box-office this weekend amounted to an estimated $50.3 million, which is a 22-year low. It hasn't been this bad since the weekend of October 3-November 1, 1998.

Weekend Box-Office: ONWARD Disappoints With $40M Debut While THE WAY BACK Opens Soft

The Disney and Pixar animated film "Onward" is off to a slow start this weekend, but still managed to top the charts. Meanwhile, the other new wide release, Warner Bros' sports drama "The Way Back" also scored a lackluster debut. Overall, the box-office did not slow down much despite the Coronavirus scare, and most older releases had strong weekend-to-weekend holds.

Weekend Box-Office: Blumhouse's INVISIBLE MAN Scares Up $29M Debut

It has been an interesting weekend at the box-office. As the only new wide release, Universal and Blumhouse's "The Invisible Man" scored a #1 debut. One of the weekend's surprises, however, is the anime "My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising" which broke into the Top 5, while the hidden-camera reality comedy "Impractical Jokers: The Movie" finished in the Top 10.

In Theaters: THE INVISIBLE MAN, BURDEN, THE JESUS ROLLS and WENDY

Universal's sci-fi horror film "The Invisible Man" is this week's only new wide release, and it's expected to score big at the box-office. The film is a reboot of the 1933 Universal classic, and it was originally supposed to be part of the studio's Dark Universe of reboots, but that plan fell through when the 2017 film "The Mummy" tanked. Starring Elisabeth Moss, the Blumhouse production has already raked in $1.65 million from previews and could finish the weekend with as much as $28-30 million from 3,610 theaters.

We also have an interesting roster of limited releases like the true story drama "Burden" starring Garrett Hedlund and Forest Whitaker, John Turturro's crime comedy "The Jesus Rolls", which is a "Big Lebowski" spin-off of sorts, and the fantasy drama "Wendy", a Peter Pan reimagining from filmmaker Benh Zeitlin ("Beasts of the Southern Wild").

• The reimagining of the classic Universal monster movie "The Invisible Man" based on the H.G. Wells novel. The film is directed by "Saw" co-creator Leigh Whannell and it stars Elisabeth Moss, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid and Michael Dorman.
• The Netflix original romantic drama "All the Bright Places" starring Elle Fanning and Justice Smith. Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Jennifer Niven, the film is directed by Brett Haley ("I'll See You in My Dreams") and it also stars Keegan-Michael Key, Luke Wilson and Alexandra Shipp.
• The sci-fi mystery "The Vast of Night" which marks the feature debut of director Andrew Patterson and screenswiters James Montague and Craig W. Sanger.
• The tongue-in-cheek satire "The Misogynists" from indie filmmaker Onur Tukel ("Catfight"). The film stars Dylan Baker, Trieste Kelly Dunn, Ivana Milicevic, Lou Jay Taylor, and Matt Walton.
• The fantasy adventure film "Abigail" from Russian director Aleksandr Boguslavsky ("Beyond the Edge").
• The metaphysical drama "2/1" starring Boyd Holbrook and Song Yang. The film marks the feature directorial dedbut of commercial helmer Juan Cabral.

• The horror thriller "The Invisible Man" starring Elisabeth Moss. The film is a re-imagining of the classic Universal monster movie of the same name, and it's written, directed and executive produced by Leigh Whannell ("Saw", "Upgrade").
• Disney and Pixar's new animated film "Soul" featuring the voices of Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey. The film is co-directed and co-written by Pete Docter ("Inside Out", "Up", "Monsters, Inc.").
• The western drama "Hell on the Border" inspired by the true story of Bass Reeves, the first black marshall in the Wild West. Written and directed by indie filmmaker Wes Miller ("River Runs Red") and it stars David Gyasi, Ron Pearlman and Frank Grillo.
• The thriller "Grand Isle" starring Nicolas Cage, KaDee Strickland, Luke Benward and Kelsey Grammer.
• The dramedy "Feast of the Seven Fishes" written and directed by indie filmmaker Robert Tinnell based on his Eisner award-nominated graphic novel and Italian holiday cookbook of the same name. The film stars Skyler Gisondo, Madison Iseman, Paul Ben-Victor, Joe Pantoliano and Addison Timlin.
• The Netflix original documentary "Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator" that explores the rise and fall of controversial hot yoga guru Bikram Choudhury.

Elisabeth Moss Joins Blumhouse and Universal's THE INVISIBLE MAN Reboot

Elisabeth Moss ("Mad Men", "The Handmaid's Tale") is ready for another collaboration with Jason Blum's production company Blumhouse following her appearance in the hit horror flick "Us". The two-time Golden Globe and Emmy winner has officially signed on to star in "The Invisible Man", the reboot of Universal's classic monster movie.

Originally announced as part of Universal's Dark Universe, the project was retooled following the disappointing debut of 2017's "The Mummy". The reboot has been written and will be directed by Leigh Whannell ("Insidious: Chapter 3", "Upgrade").

Moss will play Cecilia Kass, the love interest to Adrian Griffin, the invisible man, who in this movie is a billionaire sociopath who made his money by developing an invisibility suit for the Department of Defense. Although no actor has been officially chosen for the lead, it seems that the studios are considering Armie Hammer and Alexander Skarsgård. When the project was part of the Dark Universe, Johnny Depp was tapped to star as the invisible man.

"The Invisible Man" will begin production this Summer in Australia. There is no release date for the film.
