"The Way Back" is a sports drama directed by Gavin O'Connor ("The Accountant", "Warrior") from a script by Brad Ingelsby ("Run All Night", "Out of the Furnace").

Ben Affleck stars as Jack Cunningham, a former high school basketball phenom who walked away from the game, and is now an alcoholic construction worker separated from his wife. He reluctantly accepts a coaching job at his alma mater, and as the boys start to come together as a team and win, he may get his last shot at redemption. The cast also includes Al Madrigal, Michael Watkins, Janina Gavankar and Glynn Turman.

"The Way Back" opened in theaters on March 6, 2020.

Weekend Box-Office: ONWARD Disappoints With $40M Debut While THE WAY BACK Opens Soft

The Disney and Pixar animated film "Onward" is off to a slow start this weekend, but still managed to top the charts. Meanwhile, the other new wide release, Warner Bros' sports drama "The Way Back" also scored a lackluster debut. Overall, the box-office did not slow down much despite the Coronavirus scare, and most older releases had strong weekend-to-weekend holds.

In Theaters: ONWARD, THE WAY BACK, SWALLOW, FIRST COW and BACURAU

Disney and Pixar have released "Onward", their latest animated film, in theaters, and while the film is likely to be a surefire winner this weekend, there are concerns among pundits relating to how COVID-19 will impact the domestic box-office. The film is well received by both critics and audiences, and has already raked in $2 million from Thursday previews. The film is expected to finish the weekend with around $40 million from 4,310 theaters.

Another new wide release this week is the drama "The Way Back" starring Ben Affleck. The film is looking to score a $7 million opening weekend from 2,718 theaters.

Also, the Jane Austen adaptation "Emma" will expand into over 1,500 theaters.

In limited release it might be worth checking out the psychological thriller "Swallow" starring Haley Bennett, the period drama "First Cow" based on Jonathan Raymond's novel "The Half Life", and the Brazilian thriller "Bacurau".

• The live-action "Sonic The Hedgehog" movie based on the popular SEGA videogame franchise. The film has undergone a redesign of its central character following the fans' negative reception of the previous trailer. The film features the voice of Ben Schwartz as Sonic, and the cast also includes James Marsden, Jim Carrey, Tika Sumpter, Neal McDonough, and Lee Majdoub.
• The basketball drama "The Way Back" starring Ben Affleck, who reunites with "The Accountant" helmer Gavin O'Connor. The film also stars Janina Gavankar, Al Madrigal, Michaela Watkins, Glynn Turman and Melvin Gregg.

NEW ON DVD/BLU-RAY - Apr.19, 2011

The King's Speech

I'm sure this movie really needs no introduction whatsoever. Winner of 4 Oscars, including Best Picture, this historical epic, featuring a brilliant ensemble cast, will enthrall you. Director Tom Hooper, who also directed such TV classics as "John Adams" and "Elizabeth I", tells the tale of the stuttering king with great skill and attention to detail, always walking a thin line between the comical and the dramatic. An instant classic. Available on DVD and Blu-Ray. A review is available on this blog.

Rabbit Hole

"Rabbit Hole" is a heartbreaking study of a couple's struggle to cope with the death of their child as a result of a car accident. Riddled with guilt, they try to find the strength to carry on, not just to learn to live with the pain, but also to salvage their marriage. Wonderfully acted (Oscar nomination for Nicole Kidman), written ( by David Lindsay Abaire, based on his own play) and directed, the movie is one of the best movies of 2010. Available on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Mortal Kombat

With all the interest the Machinima web-series is generating, I suppose it's a great time to cash in on the "Mortal Kombat" hysteria. So there you are, a Blu-Ray release for the 1995 Paul W.S. Anderson cheesefest. Much better than its sequel, and still great fun, if you can take the "so bad it's good" school of thought, it was kind of lacking in the violence department, quite unlike the videogame. I can't be sure, as the web-series has only just started, but I feel like Anderson's shameless B-flick style was more fun than the wannabe gritty delusions of the overly-serious web-series. The Way Back

Based on the (heavily disputed) true story , the movie details the adventures of a group of Siberian Gulag prisoners who escape and walk over 4000 miles of the most dangerous terrain imaginable, all the way to India. Featuring a great cast : Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan, Jim Sturgess and Dragos Bucur, the movie is grand in scope and fairly entertaining, but sometimes lacks the emotional punch it needs to fully connect with the audience. Still, six-time Oscar nominated director Peter Weir delivers a visually stunning epic. Available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
