Evangeline Lilly Hobbit Desolation of Smaug Image
Evangeline Lilly stars as Tauriel in THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

What you see above is a newly released official image of actress Evangeline Lilly ("Lost") from Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug", the second of his new Middle Earth trilogy. Lilly stars as Tauriel, a different kind of elf and one that was never featured in J.R.R. Tolkien books, which has stirred something of a controversy among fans. The actress had this to say about her character:
"Tauriel is the head of the Elven Guard. She’s a Sylvan Elf, which means she’s of a much lower order than the elves we all became acquainted with in The Lord of the Rings. She doesn’t hold the same kind of status that Arwen or Galadriel or Elrond or Legolas do — she’s much more lowly. She sort of goes against the social order of the elves a little bit.

Tauriel’s relationship with Legolas is significant. They’ve known each other since they were children, and Legolas’ dad, [Elven king] Thranduil, has a soft spot for Tauriel and sees something very special in her. So if you grow up side by side, and your dad has a very special spot in his heart for this young woman who’s a fantastic warrior, I think it’s hard not to notice her.” She laughs. “That’s probably as much as I can say. "
Jackson's decision to extend and expand the story of "The Hobbit" so he could build another trilogy will prove to be either a great idea, or a great disaster. The first film in this extended trilogy, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" received mixed reviews from critics, but I see it's currently enjoying a rather impressive 8,1 out of 10 score on IMDb.com, which means that the fans have enjoyed the adventure so far. It remains to be seen if Jackson's filler material, including the addition of new characters like Tauriel, will cool off the warm welcome.

Transformers 4 Logo
Michael Bay Image

Director Michael Bay has offered some more updates on "Transformers 4" in a recent interview. According to Bay, the sequel is "redesigned" to freshen up the franchise, but it will not ignore the events from the previous three installments. The sequel will be the first of a new trilogy which takes place four years after "Dark of the Moon" and will star Mark Wahlberg in the lead role. Here are some selections from Bay's interview:
"We’re going to start off smaller. There’s a brand new cast. To freshen the franchise we’ve redesigned everything from top to bottom. The history of the first three movies is still there, we start four years later and there’s a reason why we’re meeting a new cast."

"Mark is really excited about it and it’s a great redesign. I said that 3 [which grossed $1.1 billion] was going to be my last one. Paramount was letting me do Pain & Gain and the Transformers ride was opening at Universal and it was bittersweet to think of passing it off. I wanted to set it up on a really sure footing and to bring someone else in on that, it would have been overwhelming."

"We keep the Transformers the way they were, it’s just four years later. There’s a reason the Transformers are redesigned. We’re trying to broaden the franchise and give it more places to go."

the hobbit there and back again orlando bloom image

Entertainment Weekly has published the first official image from Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: There and Back Again", featuring a first look at Luke Evans who stars as Bard the Bowman, and Orlando Bloom, who reprises his role as Legolas from "The Lord of the Rings". "There and Back Again" will be the last entry in the Hobbit trilogy and will be released on July 18, 2014. Preceding it will be "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" on December 13, 2013. The first of the trilogy, "An Unexpected Journey" will enter theaters on December 14 this year. Here are some details offered by the filmmakers on the character of Bard the Bowman:
"Bard is an interesting character, but [in the book] he’s kind of a random character who comes in after the fact. We take more time introducing him. We know from what follows that he was a father, so we [explore] that. I don’t think we take liberties, because it’s all there in the storytelling. He’s [elven king] Thranduil’s son, and Thranduil is one of the characters in The Hobbit, and because elves are immortal it makes sense Legolas would be part of the sequence in the Woodland Realm."

The Dark Knight Trilogy Limited Edition Giftset

Batman Begins

Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight's emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents' murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city.

The Dark Knight

The follow-up to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Heath Ledger stars as archvillain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes. Returning from Batman Begins are Gary Oldman as Gordon, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.

The Dark Knight Rises

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

In the last 24 hours, everyone's been buzzing about the big news that Disney bought Lucasfilm from George Lucas for the astronomical figure of $4 Billion. Above is a video of Disney CEO Bob Iger and George Lucas discussing the finer details of this deal. It's quite obvious that this is not just a simple acquisition, but also a golden oportunity for Disney to carry on with such franchises as "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones". And that is exactly what they plan to do. The first thing Disney announced is that "Star Wars: Episode 7" is planned for a 2015 release date. Not only that, but Episode 7 will mark the beginning of a new trilogy, with episodes 8 and 9 to be released in 2017 and 2019, assuming that no Earth-shattering cataclysm occurs until then. Indeed, Disney gives a whole new meaning to the term "planning ahead". The new "Star Wars" releases will be entirely Disney property and 20th Century Fox will no longer be involved. However, it seems that Fox still holds the home video release rights and that contract doesn't expire until May 2020, so it's safe to assume that a legal battle will ensue. The legal troubles include the 3D re-releases of the remaining five films in the series, which Fox will also handle. Hopefully, they'll get things sorted out until 2015.

But let's put aside the dark legal aspects for a bit and talk some more about "Star Wars: Episode 7". Lucas will still be attached to the franchise as a "creative consultant" and Kathleen Kennedy will serve as executive producer for the new trilogy. Here is a video of George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy discussing the future of the "Star Wars" films :

The acquisition also involves Lucas' videogame franchises, his visual effect company Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and Skywalker Sound. Disney plans to leave ILM "as it is". Also, there is no mention of future "Indiana Jones" films, but never say never. In case you haven't had enough of details about this deal, click the link below to read the full official press release.

The first official images from the new Princess Diana biopic have been released (above). The movie stars Naomi Watts as the Princess of Wales and the title has been changed from "Caught in Flight" to "Diana". Director Oliver Hirschbiegel ("Downfall") is at the helm of this project and the screenplay is written by Stephen Jeffreys ("The Libertine"). The story focuses on Princess Diana's love affair with heart surgeon Hasnat Kahn, who will be played by Naveen Andrews (Sayid from "Lost"). So far there are no known US or UK release dates, but France will get a chance to see "Diana" on February 20, 2013.

  • It has been officially announced that "The Amazing Spider-Man" is the first of a planned trilogy. The announcement was made via Facebook : "It’s finally here! The Amazing Spider-Man is the first installment in a movie trilogy that will explore how our fave hero’s journey was shaped by the disappearance of his parents." Also, writers Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci ("Transformers", "Cowboys & Aliens") have already been hired to perform rewrites on the sequel's script which was originally written by James Vanderbilt, who also penned the script for "The Amazing Spider-Man".

  • Guillermo Del Toro's sci-fi monster flick "Pacific Rim" has begun its teasing campaign. We have the first official image from the movie (below) featuring actors Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi and some kick-ass robotic gear in the background, and a new teaser poster featured at the Comic Con (left). The movie also stars Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Clifton Collins Jr. and Charlie Day and is scheduled for release on July 12, 2013 in the US.

  • And back to sequels, here's one that just keeps on coming, but can't quite get there : "Ghostbusters 3". After Bill Murray chose not to get involved in this long-delayed sequel, Dan Aykroyd continues the struggle to deliver a third installment in the beloved franchise. Initially, Aykroyd announced last year that the sequel will begin filming this spring, but it's summer already and nothing happened. This week, while attending an event, the actor responded the following when asked about the status of the project : "We’ve got a new writing staff working on it now. It’s got to be prefect. That’s the whole thing. There’s no point in doing it unless it’s perfect. So that’s what we’re up to now." The poor man is willing, but I doubt we're ever going to see a reboot of the franchise anytime soon. Maybe it's for the best.

I'm torn between hating and loving all these images and videos we get from the set of Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises". The disadvantage is that major plot points may be spoiled. Luckily there is the option of looking away...but I just can't...damn it ! The upside, however, is that we get teased with all kinds of cool stuff. Such is the case with the most recent pictures to appear online. A few of these give us a clear look at Batman's new vehicle, the Batwing. Click to see the pictures in their full-size glory. "The Dark Knight Rises" comes out July 20, 2012 (US). Enjoy !

Synopsis: Star Wars: The Complete Blu-ray Saga will feature all six live-action Star Wars feature films utilizing the highest possible picture and audio presentation.

Sunday, June 19, 2011

Exactly ten years have passed since the last Jurassic Park sequel, the third, came out. It was sort of successful, but it just wasn't very good. It was clear that they simply had no idea how to move the franchise forward, so they called Sam Neill back and got him to run around, chased by CGI dinosaurs. Spielberg himself took a step back and let Joe Johnston ("Jumanji" "Wolfman") direct it. Since then, rumors have surfaced on and off about "Jurassic Park 4" and you know that when rumors start to fly, there's got to be some truth to them.

In 2009, director Joe Johnston had this to say about the future of the franchise : "Well, there is a great story for the fourth one that I would be interested in getting involved with and it’s nothing like the first three. It sort of takes the franchise off in a completely different direction, which is the only way I would want to get involved." Since then, however, nothing else happened. The project seemed dead in the water. In the same interview, Johnston also mentioned that they might even push for a second trilogy, one that would deal with a completely different storyline.

On the other hand, when asked about Jurassic Park about a month ago, Sam Neill had this to say : "I think we’ve told the story. I think it’s done… Stan Winston who made those beautiful dinosaurs died. So, no Stan, no ‘Jurassic Park’ really … [and author Michael] Crichton died too".

A week ago, reports have been heating up again. Exclusive reports on the net mentioned that Steven Spielberg has been meeeting with writer Mark Protosevich ("The Cell", "I Am Legend", "Poseidon") to discuss potential ideas for a fourth movie. Spielberg has been involved in several projects this year, serving as executive producer on "Transformers: Dark of the Moon", "Super 8", "Cowboys & Aliens", "Real Steel", as well as two TV series : "Falling Skies" and "Terra Nova". He's also set to release "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn" (co-produced alongside Peter Jackson) and "War Horse" this December, both of which he directed. So, it's safe to say that Spielberg is back in the saddle and rushing to get back into the fray. Who knows, maybe he'll even return to direct "Jurassic Park 4". With all due respect to Johnston's work, "Jurassic Park III" is the worst in the trilogy. Perhaps if he had a decent story to work with... Still, I'd rather see Spielberg return to the franchise. We'll see.

"Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" is the third in the successful big screen adaptation of the animated talking/singing chipmunks' adventures, originally brought to life by Ross Bagdasarian. While the movies themselves are pretty far from any kind of satisfying cinematic standards, it seems they do bring in a lot of money, which is why Chipwrecked exists and looking to be released on December 11, 2011. Director Mike Mitchell has previously worked on "Shrek Forever After" and "Sky High". The "Titanic" references, though, are getting old real fast.

Official Synopsis: "On vacation aboard a luxury cruise ship, Alvin, Simon, Theodore and the Chipettes are up to their usual antics, turning the ship into their personal playground, until they become 'chipwrecked' on a desert island. As Dave Seville frantically searches for his AWOL charges, the 'Munks and Chipettes do what they do best – sing, dance and wreak havoc. But they're in for a surprise when they embark on an island adventure with their new friend – a castaway who's more than a match for Alvin and the Chipmunks".

Warner Brothers wastes no time. Following the amazing $135M that "The Hangover Part 2" made in only four days, the studio quickly decided to fast-track the third movie in the heavy partying trilogy. As a first step, they once again hired writer Craig Mazin ("Scary Movie 4", "Superhero Movie") to script the second sequel. Director Todd Phillips already mentioned last week that the Hangover movies were designed as a trilogy, but that was either some marketing strategy to prepare the world for the announcement of a third movie in the series, or just a joke. And, since the second one, now in theaters, has received some harsh word-of-mouth, accusing the movie of lazy writing and being a self-rip off, Phillips was quick to clarify that the last one will "Certainly not have the same template you've seen in the first two Hangover movies." So, prepare the world, the Wolfpack will return.
