Weekend Box Office: MOANA Live-Action Remake Tanks With $43.1 Million Debut

Weekend Box Office Moana Live Action Remake Tanks With 43 Million Debut

Disney's latest live-action remake "Moana" stumbled in its opening weekend but still came out on top. The R-rated horror film "Evil Dead Burn" also opened over the weekend, but failed to impress. Meanwhile, two indie comedies expanded nationwide with mixed results: Olivia Wilde's indie comedy "The Invite" fared okay, but the comedy "Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass" starring Zoey Deutch failed to make the Top 10.

Read more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Disney's "Moana" opened with $43.1 million from 3,875 theaters, which is worse than the $56.6 million debut of the 2016 original animated film. Overseas it only added $52 million for a worldwide debut of $95.1 million, which is pretty terrible considering the film cost $250 million to produce. The 2016 original only had a budget of $175 million. The 2026 live-action verion would need around $500 million just to break even, so right now it looks like Disney is going to lose a ton of money on this one. The critical reception was terrible (33% on Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences enjoyed it ("A-" CinemaScore).

"Minions & Monsters" didn't quite explode at the box office in its opening weekend, but it's enjoying a solid second weekend, grossing $21.1 million, which is a soft 42.8% drop. The domestic total is now at $108.9 million, while overseas it raked in $172.1 million, which adds up to a global tally of $281 million against an $85 million budget.

"Toy Story 5" is also enjoying a smooth ride at the box office. Now in its fourth weekend, the film raked in $19 million, dropping just 37.3%. The film has now grossed a total of $404.2 million in North America, and another $475.3 million from foreign markets. That's a worldwide cume of $879.5 million against a $250 million budget.

The other new wide release, the horror film "Evil Dead Burn", opened in fourth place with $13.7 million from 3,004 screens. That's almost half of both the 2023 debut of "Evil Dead Rise" ($24.5 million), and the 2013 opening weekend of the "Evil Dead" reboot ($25.7 million). The new installment adds another $11.3 million from international theaters for a worldwide debut of $25 million. The film only cost $20 million to produce, but with a break-even point of around $40 million, it looks like it will have a hard time turning a profit. Both the critical and audience reception have been mixed (71% on Rotten Tomatoes and "B" CinemaScore).

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Young Washington", which grossed $6.9 million in its second weekend as it suffered a massive 64.4% drop. The film has grossed a total of $33.5 million, so far, and with a budget of $20 million, it would need to cross the $40 million mark in order to turn a profit. It all depends on next week's performance. Another 50-60% drop will effectively kill the movie's profitability.

A24's comedy "The Invite" expanded into 1,610 locations and raked in $5.7 million over the weekend. It's not spectacular enough to call it a success, but it remains to be seen how well it performs if the studio decides to expand it further. The film's box office total now stands at $7.3 million after being released in select theaters on June 26th.

In other news, "Michael" has become the first biopic to cross the $1 billion mark, and it's also Lionsgate's first film to clear that milestone. The film has now grossed $371.8 million in North America, and $629.8 million internationally. "Michael" is only the second film of 2026 to gross $1 billion, following Illumination's "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie").
