The Directors Guild of America, one of the most important Oscars indicators, announced its winners last night. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu won top honors for his work on "The Revenant", a second consecutive win for the director following last years's "Birdman".
It's been a pretty crazy awards season, so far, and quite difficult to predict. The confusing aspect of the Guild awards is that the PGA chose Adam McKay's "The Big Short" as the best film of the year, so that means the Oscar race could split up the Director and Picture awards. "The Big Short", however, never really felt like a huge contender for the Best Picture Oscar, until the PGA awards actually turned it into one. George Miller did seem to have a shot at the Director award, but it now looks like Inarritu jumped ahead of him in the race. I guess time will tell.
The Documentary direction award went to Matthew Heineman for "Cartel Land", and Alex Garland scored a First-Time Feature Film Director win for "Ex Machina". In the TV categories, the DGA winners include "Veep" and "Game of Thrones".
