2016 Oscars Winners Announced

The 88th Annual Academy Awards winners were announced in a traditionally boring ceremony hosted by Chris Rock. The show was mostly a one-joke affair focused on the diversity issue which opened nicely with Rock's great monologue, but just dragged on as the ceremony piled on more social commentary ranging from ecology to sexual assaults. As a result the Oscar ratings have dropped to an 8-year low. To be more exact, the 2016 show earned the worst ratings since the 2008 Oscars hosted by Jon Stewart.

As far as the awards go, it was a pretty interesting ride. "Mad Max: Fury Road" earned the most awards, wiping out the competition in six technical categories, but missed out on the big ones. "The Revenant" picked up three trophies for Director (Alejandro G. Inarritu), Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki), breaking two records in the process: first back-to-back Best Director win for Inarritu and first Oscars hattrick for Lubezki.

The Academy managed to give out awards to everyone from "Ex Machina" and "The Danish Girl" to "The Hateful Eight", while Spotlight" won Best Picture and became the second film in Oscars history to do that with only two total wins (the other was 1952's "The Greatest Show on Earth").

Well, almost everyone got something. Sylvester Stallone lost Best Supporting Actor to Mark Rylance ("Bridge of Spies") and Lady Gaga lost Best Song to Sam Smith for "Spectre". Also, "The Martian" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" went home empty-handed. Overall, it was a pretty crazy night.

2016 BAFTA Awards Winners Announced

The winners of the 2016 BAFTAs were announced yesterday. The big winner this year was Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu's "The Revenant". The film took home five awards for Best Film, Director, Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), Sound and Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki for a third time in a row). Close behind is "Mad Max: Fury Road" with four technical wins (Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Makeup). Brie Larson won Best Actress for "Room" and in the Supporting categories the winners were Mark Rylance for "Bridge of Spies" and Kate Winslet for "Steve Jobs". Sci-fi fans may also have a reason to celebrate as "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" scored a trophy for Best Visual Effects.

2016 DGA Awards Winners Announced

The Directors Guild of America, one of the most important Oscars indicators, announced its winners last night. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu won top honors for his work on "The Revenant", a second consecutive win for the director following last years's "Birdman".

It's been a pretty crazy awards season, so far, and quite difficult to predict. The confusing aspect of the Guild awards is that the PGA chose Adam McKay's "The Big Short" as the best film of the year, so that means the Oscar race could split up the Director and Picture awards. "The Big Short", however, never really felt like a huge contender for the Best Picture Oscar, until the PGA awards actually turned it into one. George Miller did seem to have a shot at the Director award, but it now looks like Inarritu jumped ahead of him in the race. I guess time will tell.

The Documentary direction award went to Matthew Heineman for "Cartel Land", and Alex Garland scored a First-Time Feature Film Director win for "Ex Machina". In the TV categories, the DGA winners include "Veep" and "Game of Thrones".

Weekend Box-Office: KUNG FU PANDA 3 Still Leads Ahead of Three New Releases

The Super Bowl weekend favored the animated sequel "Kung Fu Panda 3" which managed to stay ahead of three new wide releases: the Coens' period comedy "Hail, Caesar !", the Nicholas Sparks adaptation "The Choice" and the horror parody "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies".

Weekend Box-Office: KUNG FU PANDA 3 Knocks Off THE REVENANT

"Kung Fu Panda 3" knocked "The Revenant" off its throne, although the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer is still holding strong, while the other new wide releases "The Finest Hours" and "Fifty Shades of Black" failed to impress.

"The Revenant" continues to lead at the box-office despite the bout of bad weather that struck the East Coast. Meanwhile, new arrivals "Dirty Grandpa", "The 5th Wave" and "The Boy", performed modestly well.

Box-Office: RIDE ALONG 2 and THE REVENANT Dominate

"Ride Along 2" and "The Revenant" lead the charts while "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" finally took a step back. Still, Disney's behemoth managed to cross $1 billion internationally. Also, Michael Bay sort of flopped.

2016 Oscar Nominations Announced

The nominations for the 88th Annual Academy Awards were announced today. "The Revenant" gathered the most nods in no less than twelve categories, followed in second place by "Mad Max: Fury Road" with ten nominations. While many of the expected candidates received nods, there were indeed a few notable snubs and surprises.

Both Aaron Sorkin and Quentin Tarantino failed to secure Original Screenplay nods and Ridley Scott didn't make the cut for Best Director, and "Carol" was left out of Best Picture. As for the surprises, Tom Hardy and Jennifer Lawrence received recognition in Supporting Actor and Leading Actress categories, and Lenny Abrahamson was nominated for Best Director for his work on "Room", a film that also defied expectations in the Best Picture category, as well.

The Oscar winners will be announced on February 28th.

2016 Golden Globe Awards Winners

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the winners of the 2016 Golden Globe Awards. Alejandro González Iñárritu's "The Revenant" took home the awards for Best Picture (Drama), Director and Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio). Ridley Scott's "The Martian" won Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) and Actor in a Comedy or Musical (Matt Damon). A little odd that genre choice right there, but a win's a win.

The Best Actress in a Drama award went to Brie Larson for "Room" while Jennifer Lawrence scored a win for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her performance in "Joy". In the supporting categories the trophies went to Kate Winslet for "Steve Jobs" and Sylvester Stallone for "Creed". "Steve Jobs" was also rewarded for Best Original Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin)

In the Television categories, the winning shows and TV movies were "Mr. Robot", "Mozart in the Jungle" and "Wolf Hall", while Lady Gaga, Oscar Isaac, Taraji P. Henson, Jon Hamm, Rachel Bloom, Gael Garcia Bernal, Maura Tierney and Christian Slater took home trophies for their performances.

Weekend Box-Office: THE REVENANT Makes Impressive Debut while STAR WARS Attacks China

Nobody expected "The Revenant" to pose any threat to "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", but the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer made an aggressive debut and while it wasn't enough to take first place, it was nevertheless impressive. The new release "The Forest" also performed quite well for a small budget horror in January.

In Theaters: THE REVENANT, THE FOREST, ANESTHESIA, DIABLO

This week, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu's awards contender "The Revenant" makes its nationwide debut. The only new wide release is the horror "The Forest" starring Natalie Dormer. This one, however, is not an awards hopeful. Two somewhat interesting new releases in limited release, as well. The first is "Anesthesia" a drama written and directed by actor Tim Blake Nelson which stars Kristen Stewart, while the other is a western drama called "Diablo" which stars Scott Eastwood and Walton Goggins. New THE REVENANT Featurettes, Clip, Images and Posters

Today Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu's "The Revenant" expands nationwide, so here are five new featurettes, a clip, fourteen images and three posters. The film received glowing reviews and is widely regarded as an uncompromising and brutally beautiful film that showcases another excellent performance by Leonardo DiCaprio and Emmanuel Lubezki's haunting cinematography. The film also stars Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter, Paul Anderson, Lukas Haas and Grace Dove Syme.

2016 WGA and PGA Nominations Announced

The nominees for the 2016 Writers Guild and Producers Guild awards have been announced. Most of the candidates are rather obvious, including films like "Spotlight, Steve Jobs, Sicario, The Big Short, The Martian, The Revenant" and "Mad Max: Fury Road". Some weren't as lucky, however, like Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight" and "The Danish Girl", while "Carol" missed out on a PGA nod.

Some surprises include the nods received by "Straight Outta Compton" at both the WGA and PGA, as well as a nomination for Original Screenplay scored by the Amy Schumber comedy "Trainwreck". Another big surprise is the inclusion of "True Detective" Season 2 on the PGA Long-Form Television category, since it was mostly derided for being, well, pretty bad.

TV candidates include "The Good Wide", "American Horror Story: Hotel", "Fargo", "Game of Thrones", "Better Call Saul", "Mad Men", "Veep", "Transparent", "Silicon Valley" and "Modern Family".

The PGA winners will be announced on January 23rd, while the WGA winners will be revealed on February 13th.

2016 Golden Globe Nominations

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has revealed the nominees for the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards. The film with the most nominations this year is Todd Haynes' "Carol" with five nods for Best Picture, Director, a double for Leading Actress (Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara), and Score (Carter Burwell). Close behind are "The Revenant", "Steve Jobs" and "The Big Short" with four nominations each.

A big surprise, though, is that "Mad Max: Fury Road" scored two major nods (Best Picture and Director). "The Martian" is also present in three Comedy or Musical categories (Picture, Director and Leading Actor). It's a strange choice to call it a Comedy, but I guess it should be thankful, otherwise two of its three nominations would have probably disappeared.

It was a good year for Alicia Vikander who scored two nominations, one for "The Danish Girl" in the Lead Role category, and one for "Ex Machina" for Supporting Role.

The TV nominees include "Game of Thrones", "Empire", "Narcos", "Mr. Robot", "American Horror Story: Hotel", "Mozart in the Jungle", "Casual", "Fargo", "Outlander", "Transparent", "Veep" and more.

The winners will be announced Sunday, January 10th on NBC and the show will be hosted by Ricky Gervais.

A new trailer and nine images for Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu's "The Revenant" have been released online. Inspired by true events, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as legendary explorer Hugh Glass, who is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by the members of his own hunting team while on an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness. Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, he must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption. Tom Hardy, Domnhall Gleeson, Will Poulter, Paul Anderson, Lukas Haas and Grace Dove Syme co-star.

"The Revenant" will get a limited release on December 25th and will expand nationwide in January 2016.

The film is inspired by true events and it stars Leonardo DiCaprio as legendary explorer Hugh Glass, who is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by the members of his own hunting team. He is forced to endure unimaginable dificulties in a vicious winter environment, but guided by sheer will and the love of his family he fights to stay alive and take vengeance on those who wronged him. The cast also includes Tom Hardy, Domnhall Gleeson, Will Poulter, Paul Anderson and Lukas Haas.

"The Revenant" will get a limited release on December 25th and will expand nationwide in January 2016.
