Dwayne Johnson to Star as Motorcycle Stuntman With Dementia In Action Drama FREE BYRD
Dwayne Johnson has signed on to star in and produce the action drama "Free Byrd" directed by Academy Award nominee Greg Kwedar ("Sing Sing", "Train Dreams") from a script he rewrote from a first draft by writer/directors Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson ("The Peanut Butter Falcon"), which originated from Jon Boyer's original screenplay that was featured on the Black List of most promising unproduced scripts. The film is produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's Artists Equity.

Johnson stars as a Las Vegas motorcycle stuntman who conceals a dementia diagnosis from everyone, including his mechanic brother, as he risks everything on one last jump. The film examines and confronts the mind's vast mysteries and the beauty and power of asking for help before it's too late.

Here's what Johnson had say about the casting in a statement: "'Free Byrd' is a gift in many ways. Emblematic of life's sacred beauty, as well as life's harsh and callous reality. The subject matter of 'Free Byrd' has become deeply personal to Greg Kwedar and myself as we've started to unpack this fateful journey together. Artists Equity have been incredible filmmaking and artistic partners, who not only share Greg's vision for the film, but who are all connected to our story in their own unique and personal ways. When the mind of a loved one begins to slip away, life sure takes on a whole new meaning".

Affleck and Damon, Artists Equity's CEO and Chief Content Officer added: "This is a project that all of us at the company have connected with personally. Greg is one of the most exciting writer-directors working today, and Dwayne is an extraordinary talent and person. We are extremely excited that they have chosen to make this with us and very much look forward to sharing the finished film with audiences".

Academy Award nominee Gil Netter ("Life of Pi", "The Blind Side") is the one who originally brought "Free Byrd" to Artists Equity and will serve as producer. Also producing are Fifth Season, Johnson for Seven Bucks Productions, Kwedar and two-time Academy Award nominee Clint Bentley for Ethos.

Johnson can next be seen in Disney's live-action remake "Moana", and will next star in the sequel "Jumanji: Open World" and Benny Safdie's live-action family adventure comedy "Lizard Music".

Matt Damon Joins New Film From The Daniels

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, aka the Daniels, the filmmakers behind the Oscar-winning sci-fi epic "Everything Everywhere All At Once", are hard at work on their next untitled movie, which has been described as an "event film", in development at Universal Pictures since 2024. Casting is underway, and the first big piece of news arrived this past spring as Ryan Gosling was reportedly attached to the project. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, he was forced to exit, but it now seems that the Daniels have found their leading man: Matt Damon.

Fresh off his collaboration with Universal on Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated epic "The Odyssey", Damon was reportedly not looking for a new project, and instead planned to rest and spend time with family. However, in recent weeks he started looking at scripts, and came upon the Daniels' new film. Following a meeting with the filmmaking duo, it was agreed that the film would shoot later this summer in Los Angeles, after Damon is done promoting "The Odyssey", which opens in theaters on July 18, 2026.

Plot details have not been revealed. Last year, the project was conditionally approved for a $38.4 million California tax credit on its projected qualified expenditure in the state of $107.3 million. It is set to open in theaters on November 19, 2027.

Kwan, Scheinert and Jonathan Wang will produce through their company Playgrounds' overall deal with Universal. Executive VP Production Development Sara Scott and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the Daniels' new project for Universal.

Ben Affleck To Direct And Star Thriller Animals

Ben Affleck is set to direct and star in the upcoming Netflix thriller "Animals". Affleck was in talks to direct since last year, but Matt Damon was originally set to star in the lead role. After a holdup with the rights delayed the start of production, Affleck had to move on to "The Accountant" sequel. Affleck was still interested in directing "Animals", but with Damon now shooting Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey", he decided to take on the starring role himself.

The script is penned by Connor McIntyre and Billy Ray ("Captain Phillips", "The Hunger Games"). Plot details are being kept under wraps except for the fact that it revolves around a kidnapping. Gillian Anderson ("The X-Files", "Sex Education") is also on aboard to star. Filming is expected to begin in Los Angeles.

Affleck, Damon and Dani Bernfeld will produce through their Artists Equity banner, the artist-led studio founded by Affleck, Damon and Gerry Cardinale. Brad Weston and Collin Creighton are also producing for Makeready, which developed the project in partnership with Fifth Season. Artists Equity’s Michael Joe, Kevin Halloran and Lucy Damon will serve as executive producers alongside Fifth Season.

Affleck will star alongside Damon in the Netflix and Artists Equity crime thriller "RIP", which will release later this year.

Zendaya And Anne Hathaway Join Christopher Nolans New Movie

More A-listers are joining "The Dark Knight" and "Interstellar" filmmaker Christopher Nolan's new film. Zendaya and Anne Hathaway have joined the cast of the director's untitled upcoming feature, which already stars Tom Holland and Matt Damon. Hathaway previously worked with the filmmaker on "Interstellar" and "The Dark Knight Rises".

As expected, plot details are being kept under wraps. Nolan wrote the script and is directing. Universal Pictures will distribute. Nolan is producing alongside producing partner and wife Emma Thomas for their Syncopy banner. The release date has been set for July 17, 2026. The movie is expected to start shooting in early 2025.

For this project, Nolan reunites with the studio that made his drama "Oppenheimer", which grossed $976 million worldwide and won 7 Oscars, including Best Picture. "Oppenheimer" was picked up by the studio in an open auction setting, and it marked the first time the filmmaker split with longtime partner Warner Bros.

"Zendaya" is currently filming the A24 feature "The Drama" in which she stars opposite Robert Pattinson and Alana Haim. Hathaway can next be seen in David Lowery' film "Mother Mary" and Warner Bros' "Flowervale Street" from Bad Robot.

Tom Holland To Star In Christopher Nolan Movie

"Spider-Man: No Way Home" star Tom Holland is in talks to star in Christopher Nolan's next film. Matt Damon has already joined the cast of the movie that is written and directed by Nolan. Universal will release the film in theaters on July 17, 2026.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but sources say the setting is not present day. The untitled project is expected to start shooting in early 2025. Nolan is producing alongside producing partner and wife Emma Thomas for their Syncopy banner. Damon previously worked with Nolan on "Interstellar" and "Oppenheimer".

The actor, best known for playing Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will be busy with the fourth "Spider-Man" movie and a potential "Avengers" sequel over the next year. "Spider-Man 4" was delayed enough that Holland's co-star Zendaya will now be shooting "Dune 3" in early 2026 rather than next year. Holland has also appeared in the West End adaptation of "Romeo & Juliet" alongside Francesca Amewudah-Rivers.

For his new movie Nolan reunites with the studio that backed his hugely successful Oscar-winning historical drama "Oppenheimer" ($975 million worldwide), which was the filmmaker's first collaboration with Universal. In doing so, the director severed a nearly two-decade long creative partnership with Warner Bros. Nolan reportedly went directly to Universal for his new project rather than shopping the film around.
