Weekend Box Office: Taylor Swift's New Album Theatrical Event Dominates With $34 Million

Although more of a backstage pass than an actual movie, Taylor Swift's "The Official Release Party of a Showgirl" easily topped the box office charts, while Dwayne Johnson's "The Smashing Machine" tanked with the worst opening in the superstar's entire career. Meanwhile the supernatural horror film "Good Boy", which featured a canine protagonist, scored a modest debut, and "Anemone" starring an out-of-retirement Daniel Day-Lewis failed to make the Top 10.

"The Smashing Machine" is a biographical drama written, directed and edited by Benny Safdie ("Uncut Gems") based on the 2002 documentary "The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr". The film stars Dwayne Johnson as MMA fighter Mark Kerr, alongside Emily Blunt, Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten and Oleksandr Usyk.

The film premiered in competition at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival where Safdie won the Silver Lion for Best Director. It opened in theaters on October 3, 2025.

Venice Film Festival 2025 Winners: Jim Jarmusch Wins Golden Lion

Jim Jarmusch was the big winner at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, taking home the Golden Lion (Best Film) for his new film "Father Mother Sister Brother". The Silver Lion for best director went to Benny Safdie for his biopic "The Smashing Machine" starring Dwayne Johnson, while the Gaza drama "The Voice of Hind Rajab" won the Grand Jury prize.

The jury this year consisted of Alexander Payne ("Sideways", "About Schmidt", "The Holdovers"), Fernanda Torres ("I'm Still Here"), Mohammad Rasoulof ("The Seed of the Sacred Fig"), Cristian Mungiu ("4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days"), Stephane Brize ("Out of Season"), Maura Delpero ("Vermiglio") and Zhao Tao ("Caught by the Tides").

Today we have new trailers for:

• The UFC biopic "The Smashing Machine" which stars Dwayne Johnson as MMA fighter Mark Kerr. The drama is directed by "Uncut Gems" and "Good Time" co-helmer Benny Safdie, who is making his solo directorial debut. Emily Blunt co-stars.
• Amazon's new British crime comedy "Deep Cover" starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed ("Ted Lasso"). The film is directed by TV helmer Tom Kingsley ("Ghosts") from a script originally written by Derek Connolly and Colin Trevorrow ("Safety Not Guaranteed", "Jurassic World") and a final draft by British comics Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen. The cast also includes Paddy Considine, Sonoya Mizuno and Ian McShane.
• "Weapons", the new mystery horror film from "Barbarian" filmmaker Zach Cregger. The film stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong and Amy Madigan.
• The threequel "Now You See Me: Now You Don’t" starring Jesse Eisenberg, Dave Franco, Isla Fisher and Morgan Freeman. New cast members include Rosamund Pike, Dominic Sessa ("The Holdoers"), Ariana Greenblatt ("Borderlands") and Justice Smith ("I Saw the TV Glow"). The sequel is directed by Ruben Fleischer ("Venom").
• The post-apocalyptic action thriller "40 Acres" starring Danielle Deadwyler ("Till").
• The action sci-fi horror film "Primal Games" written and directed by David Ryan Keith ("The Redwood Massacre"). The film stars Hannaj Bang Bendz, John Love and Gary Kasper.

Emily Blunt in Talks to Join Dwayne Johnson in THE SMASHING MACHINE

Oscar-nominee Emily Blunt is in negotiations to reteam with "Jungle Cruise" co-star Dwayne Johnson for A24's upcoming film "The Smashing Machine". The biopic chronicles the story of legendary MMA and UFC champion Mark Kerr at the peak of his career, as he struggled with addiction, winning, love and friendship in the year 2000. Kerr was a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion and World Vale Tudo Championship tournament winner. Over the course of his career, he won over two dozen MMA titles.

The film is directed by Benny Safdie, who rose to fame with his brother Josh as the co-director of the acclaimed thrillers "Uncut Gems" and "Good Time". This will be Safdie's first solo project.

Johnson will star as Kerr, while Blunt is in talks to play Dawn Staples, Kerr's wife. According to the studio, "While trying to set up a new life together, Dawn struggles to find her place within Mark’s chaotic and contradictory world".

Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia's Seven Bucks Productions will produce alongside Safdie's Out for the Count banner, Eli Bush and David Koplan.

Johnson and Safdie started the project in 2019, when the actor acquired the rights, but fell out of touch and put the film on hold due to the pandemic. Years later, on a phone call with Blunt, Johnson opened up to her about his desire to reconnect with the project and play Kerr. After watching the 2002 HBO documentary "The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr", Blunt encouraged Johnson: "You must make this movie". Blunt and Safdie worked together recently on the set of "Oppenheimer", and Johnson's name came up, prompting Safdie to reconnect with the actor and resume work on the project.

In a recent interview, Johnson said the following: "Benny wants to create, and continues to push the envelope when it comes to stories that are raw and real, characters that are authentic and at times uncomfortable and arresting. I’m at a point in my career where I want to push myself in ways that I’ve not pushed myself in the past. I’m at a point in my career where I want to make films that matter, that explore a humanity and explore struggle [and] pain.".

Dwayne Johnson to Play MMA Fighter Mark Kerr in Benny Safdie's THE SMASHING MACHINE

Dwayne Johnson is set to take on hist most dramatic role yet in A24's upcoming biopic "The Smashing Machine". The film, which chronicles the story of MMA and UFC champion Mark Kerr, marks Benny Safdie's solo directorial debut. Safdie is best known for co-directing the crime thrillers "Uncut Gems" and "Good Time" alongside his brother Josh.

The film is a drama that follows Mark Kerr, the legendary MMA fighter from the no-holds-barred era of the UFC at the peak of his career, as he struggles with addiction, winning, love and friendship in the year 2000.

Kerr was a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion and World Vale Tudo Championship tournament winner. Over the course of his career, he won over two dozen MMA titles. In 2003, Kerr was the subject of an HBO documentary, also titled "The Smashing Machine".

Johnson will also produce alongside Safdie, Dany Garcia, Eli Bush and David Koplan. Safdie and Johnson have collaborated on this project ever since Johnson first acquired the rights in 2019. A24 in on board as producer and financier.

Noah Sacco of A24 said the following: "Dwayne and Benny are singular talents, and their shared vision for Mark’s inspiring story is electrifying. We are deeply honored to have their trust as collaborators in bringing this incredibly special project to life.".

Johnson can next be seen in Netflix's action comedy sequel "Red Notice 2", and Amazon's action comedy "Red One" alongside Chris Evans.
