It's been a while since anyone even mentioned this sci-fi pseudo-franchise. "Starship Troopers", originally a novel written by Robert A. Heinlein, was adapted for the big screen by Paul Verhoeven, in 1997. The movie didn't do very well at the box-office and only managed to score an Oscar nomination for its awesome visual effects, but it did become a cult-favorite and spawned two awful direct-to-video sequels, a short-lived animated TV series and a couple of videogames. The franchise's fanbase seems to have impressed studio chiefs, because rumors of a remake are beginning to surface. According to these rumors, "Fast Five" producer Neal Moritz and "Thor" screenwriters Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz are working out the project's first steps. It's still too early to say for sure if the remake will happen, but what we do know for sure is that they're willing to give it a go. For reference, here's a trailer of Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers" :

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker lead a reunion of returning all-stars from every chapter of the explosive franchise built on speed in Fast Five. In this installment, former cop Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) partners with ex-con Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) on the opposite side of the law. Dwayne Johnson joins returning favorites Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Matt Schulze, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Tego Calderon and Don Omar for this ultimate high-stakes race. Since Brian and Mia Toretto (Brewster) broke Dom out of custody, they've blown across many borders to elude authorities. Now backed into a corner in Rio de Janeiro, they must pull one last job in order to gain their freedom. As they assemble their elite team of top racers, the unlikely allies know their only shot of getting out for good means confronting the corrupt businessman who wants them dead. But he's not the only one on their tail. Hard-nosed federal agent Luke Hobbs (Johnson) never misses his target. When he is assigned to track down Dom and Brian, he and his strike team launch an all-out assault to capture them. But as his men tear through Brazil, Hobbs learns he can't separate the good guys from the bad. Now, he must rely on his instincts to corner his prey...before someone else runs them down first. -- (c) Universal Studios.

Vin Diesel versus The Rock ? Are you kidding me ? What can be cooler than that ? I suppose that's what some executive over at Universal thought when the idea was first pitched. The "Fast & Furious" franchise is still very profitable so this movie will probably make some big bucks. A reunion of characters featured througout the franchise, "Fast Five" seems appropriately spectacular and they even seem to have toned down the CGI-heavy stunts a bit, except for a canyon dive that seems to take a page from Diesel's "xXx" movie. The lesson here is that excess is the key to success, or so they seem to think.
