elle-movie-trailers-clips-images-posters-isabelle-huppert

"Elle" is a new psychological thriller from Dutch master Paul Verhoeven. In his Hollywood days, the director was responsable for ultra-violent masterpieces such as "RoboCop", "Total Recall" and "Starship Troopers", as well as the erotic thriller "Basic Instinct". After the not-so-great "Hollow Man" in 2000, Verhoeven left Hollywood and his next film, the BAFTA-nominated "Zwartboek", came after a six-year hiatus. Now, after another 10 dry years, the director returns with a very different, but equally provocative film. It's also his first French language film.

Isabelle Huppert stars as the successful head of a video game company, who is ruthless both in business and her love life. When she is raped in her own home by a masked assailant, her life spirals out of control as she plots revenge and enters a dangerous game with her suspected attacker. Laurent Lafitte, Anne Consigny, Christian Berkel, Jonas Bloquet, Virginie Efira and Charles Berling co-star.

The film has been generously rewarded with numerous awards, including two Golden Globes for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actress (Drama), and the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Last year, Verhoeven was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. It missed out on the BAFTA awards this year, because the film was not yet released in the U.K., so it will probably receive its due recognition next year.

The biggest snub, however came from the Academy Awards. The film was selected as the French entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards, but it didn't make the shortlist. It is now known as "one of the greatest Oscar Foreign Language Film Snubs of all-time."

"Elle" opened in limited release on November 11, 2016 in the U.S. and will be released in the U.K. on March 10th.

elle-2016-movie-trailer-poster

Today we have the first official trailer and poster for the thriller "Elle". The film marks the French-language directorial debut of Paul Verhoeven, acclaimed director of "Ropocop" and "Total Recall". Verhoeven has directed only two other movies after the 2000 sci-fi thriller "Hollow Man" ended his relationship with Hollywood. Of these two films, only "Black Book" ("Zwartboek") has received notable attention and earned him a 2006 BAFTA nomination for Best Film not in the English Language.

Based on the Philippe Djian's novel, "Elle" stars Isabelle Huppert as the head of a top European video games company, ruthless in both business and love. Her life is changed forever when one night a masked man bursts into her home, and rapes her. She then proceeds to track down her assailant, initiating a dangerous cat-and-mouse game that threatens to spiral out of control. Virginie Efira, Christian Berkel, Anne Consigny and Charles Berling co-star.

The film doesn't have an official release date.

transformers movie posterMore "Transformers 4" buzz. Michael Bay revealed more details regarding how the new sequel will fit into the franchise : "It’s not a reboot, that’s maybe the wrong word. I don’t want to say reboot because then people will think we’re doing a Spider-Man and starting from the beginning. We’re not. We’re taking the story that you’ve seen — the story we’ve told in three movies already — and we’re taking it in a new direction. But we’re leaving those three as the history. It all still counts. I met with the writer before I went off to do Pain and Gain and we talked about a bunch of ideas. We let that simmer for a bit. He’s been thinking about stuff and now we’re getting back together next week to see what we’ve got and to see if it gels." • Jim Carrey dropped out of the "Dumb and Dumber" sequel. The movie, directed by the original's directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly and written by Sean Anders ("That's My Boy") and John Morris ("Hot Tub Time Machine"), was apparently not a very high priority for Warner Brothers which upset Carrey, who eventually decided to leave the project. "Dumb and Dumber" co-star Jeff Daniels was also set to reprise his role, but now the fate of the sequel is uncertain.

  • jesus of nazareth Paul Verhoeven ("Robocop", "Basic Instinct", "Showgirls") is the last director on Earth you would think about when you're talking about a Jesus movie. But, since biblical epics are making a comeback (Aronofsky's "Noah", Spielberg's "Gods and Kings" and Ridley Scott's "Moses"), Verhoeven is preparing one of his own and in his particular brand of cinema, no less : "Jesus might have been the product of his mother being raped by a Roman soldier, which Verhoeven said was commonplace at the time, and that Jesus was a radical prophet who performed exorcisms and was convinced he would find the kingdom of Heaven on earth, and did not know he would be sentenced to die on the cross by Pontius Pilate." The movie, which will be written by Roger Avary ("Reservoir Dogs"), is based on Verhoeven's own book titled "Jesus of Nazareth", which breaks away from the mystical angle and presents Jesus as a "complete man, someone who was changed by events, the leader of a political movement, and, perhaps most importantly, someone who, in his speeches and sayings, introduced a new ethic in which the embrace of human contradictions transcends the mechanics of value and worth that had defined the material world before Jesus." Check out the book on Amazon.com for more information.
Verhoeven also said in the interview that : "If you look at the man, it’s clear you have a person who was completely innovative in the field of ethics. My own passion for Jesus came when I started to realize that. It’s not about miracles, it’s about a new set of ethics, an openness towards the world, which was anathema in a Roman-dominated world. I believe he was crucified because they felt that politically, he was a dangerous person whose following was getting bigger and bigger. Jesus’ ideals are about the utopia of human behavior, about how we should treat each other, how we should step into the shoes of our enemy."

  • man of steel superman official imageAnd in a cool last bit of news, it was announced this week that Hans Zimmer will compose the music for the Superman reboot "Man of Steel". The movie is directed by Zack Snyder ("300", "Watchmen") and produced by Christopher Nolan ("Inception", "The Dark Knight"). Anyone expecting the return of John Williams' excellent Superman theme will probably be disappointed. I'm sure that the soundtrack Snyder is looking for is more in the vein of Zimmer's work on the Dark Knight Trilogy. It's been a while since anyone even mentioned this sci-fi pseudo-franchise. "Starship Troopers", originally a novel written by Robert A. Heinlein, was adapted for the big screen by Paul Verhoeven, in 1997. The movie didn't do very well at the box-office and only managed to score an Oscar nomination for its awesome visual effects, but it did become a cult-favorite and spawned two awful direct-to-video sequels, a short-lived animated TV series and a couple of videogames. The franchise's fanbase seems to have impressed studio chiefs, because rumors of a remake are beginning to surface. According to these rumors, "Fast Five" producer Neal Moritz and "Thor" screenwriters Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz are working out the project's first steps. It's still too early to say for sure if the remake will happen, but what we do know for sure is that they're willing to give it a go. For reference, here's a trailer of Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers" :
