Weekend Box-Office Report: THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY, THOR: THE DARK WORLD

"Thor: The Dark World" managed to hold on at the top spot this weekend but was very closely followed by the comedy "The Best Man Holiday". The Marvel sequel pulled off $38 million over the 3-day timeframe, bringing its total cume to $146 million in the US, which is still under the first "Thor" ($181 million), but well on its way to beat the first film's gross. The Thor franchise is not one of Marvel's ultra-high earners domestically, but internationally it's doing much better. "Thor: The Dark World" has earned $332 million overseas, so far.

"The Best Man Holiday", a sequel to the 1999 comedy "The Best Man", managed to take second place with $30 million in its opening weekend versus a $17 million budget. The first film earned $34 million in its entire theatrical run, costing only $8 million to make.

The comedy "Last Vegas" and the animated feature "Free Birds" also followed each other pretty closely, but with much smaller figures, $8.8 million and $8.3 million, respectively. The R-rated comedy "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa" rounds up the top five with $7.6 million.

Weekend Box-Office Report: ENDER'S GAME, LAST VEGAS, FREE BIRDS

The sci-fi adventure "Ender's Game" was this weekend's top movie, earning $28 million. The film is an adaptation of Orson Scott Card's classic sci-fi novel and was considered for years a book that is impossible to adapt for the big screen. So far, the Gavin Hood directed epic is off to a good start, but it will be extremely hard for the movie to earn back its $110 million budget, especially since the foreign gross is not very impressive, so far ($9 million).

Dropping down to No. 2 is the Jackass comedy "Bad Grandpa" which has managed a strong hold, dropping only 36% in its second weekend and bringing its total gross to $79 million worldwide versus a budget of just $15 million. The R-rated comedy is definitely one of the year's big hits.

The comedy "Last Vegas", boasting big stars like Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline, opened at No. 3 with $16.5 million, much better than most expected. The film only cost $28 million, so it should be able to recouperate the costs and even turn a profit.

The other new release of the week, the animated feature "Free Birds" did not perform so well. The film grossed $16 million versus a budget of $55 million, which is definitely not good.

"Gravity" rounds up the top 5, still strong with $13 million grossed over the weekend, which brings its amazing total to $426 million worldwide.
