Weekend Box-Office: THE EQUALIZER 3 Dominates Labor Day Frame

Sony's action thriller sequel "The Equalizer 3" was the Labor Day champion this year, taking down "Gran Turismo", and scoring the second-highest holiday debut. Meanwhile, the summer box-office has crossed the $4 billion milestone for the first time since the pandemic hit.

Weekend Box-Office: GRAN TURISMO Wins the Race With $17.3M Debut

National Cinema Day, a celebration of moviegoing during which all tickets at participating locations are $4 (including IMAX and 3D), helped boost this weekend's box-office results. This Sunday was the highest-grossing day with $34.3 million, ahead of Saturday's $28.6 million and Friday's $27.5 million. "Gran Turismo" topped the charts, but is still in a close race against "Barbie" for the top spot.

"Gran Turismo" is a sports drama directed by Neill Blomkamp ("District 9", "Elysium") from a script by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin based on the racing game series of the same name and loosely inspired by the true story of Jann Mardenborough, a teenage "Gran Turismo" player who became a professional race car driver. The cast includes Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Darren Barnet, Emelia Hartford, Geri Halliwell Horner and Djimon Hounsou. The film opened in theaters on August 25, 2023.

David Harbour To Star In GRAN TURISMO Adaptation for Sony and PlayStation

David Harbour has signed on to star in Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions' big screen adaptation of the racing video game franchise "Gran Turismo". The film will be directed by "District 9" and "Elysium" helmer Neill Blomkamp from a script by Jason Hall ("American Sniper") and Zach Baylin ("King Richard").

Based on a true story, the film is the ultimate wish-fulfillment tale of a teenage "Gran Turismo" player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver. Game creator Kazunori Yamauchi is on board as an executive producer.

PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, as well as Doug Belgrad and Dana Brunetti, are producing.

The film will be released in theaters on August 11, 2023.

"Gran Turismo" was released in Japan in 1997 and revolutionized the racing genre by creating what is regarded as the most authentic driving simulator with its to true-to-life graphics, physics technology and precise attention to detail. The latest installment in the franchise, "Gran Turismo 7", was released on March 4, 2022. Since its launch in 1997, the franchise has sold more than 80 million copies worldwide.

Harbour is set to reprise the Red Guardian role from "Black Widow" for Marvel's upcoming "Thunderbolts" movie, and will also return fo the final season of "Stranger Things". He also recently finished work on the action film "Violent Night" for Universal.
