Weekend Box-Office Report: LEE DANIELS' THE BUTLER Breaks KICK-ASS 2, JOBS and PARANOIA tanked

First place was taken, surprisingly, by the true story drama "The Butler", directed by Lee Daniels ("Precious") and starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey alongside a huge cast of stars. The film grossed $25 million in three days versus a 30 million budget.

The comic book adaptation sequel "Kick-Ass 2" failed to impress at the box-office. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz and Jim Carrey, the ultra-violent action comedy grossed $13 million and claimed fourth place in its opening weekend. The first film opened with $19 million and went on to gross $96 million worldwide. Not big money, but it was expected that the sequel would perform at least slightly better. Anyway, "Kick-Ass 2" is low budget flick ($28 million), so it shouldn't have any trouble recouperating its costs.

The Steve Jobs biopic "Jobs" tanked. The Ashton Kutcher starrer only grossed 6.7 million. On a positive note, the film only cost $12 million to make, so there won't be any problems on the investment side of things.

The corporate thriller "Paranoia" starring Liam Hemsworth, Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman and Amber Heard proved to be an even more spectacular failure. The film grossed $3.5 million in its first three days and did not make it in the top 10.

The Internet and social networking are powerful tools in "Kick-Ass 2" as we can see in the two recently released viral clips. In the first film, Kick-Ass had a MySpace page, but The Mother Fucker, the sequel's villain, uses Twitter as evident from the first of the viral clips. The second one is another recruitment video for Justice Forever, the superhero league led by Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey). "Kick-Ass 2" stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jim Carrey, Morris Chestnut, John Leguizamo, Olga Kurkulina and Donald Faison. The release date is August 16, 2013.

The trailer doesn't add too much new stuff, it's just arranged differently and it's green-band, so there's much less violence and profanity. The featurette is much more interesting as it gives us a look at behind-the-scenes footage as well as cast interviews that shed some light on what to expect from this sequel. The first trailer for "Kick-Ass 2" is here at last, and it's a red-band trailer, folks ! Lots and lots of brutal violence and foul language. And Jim Carrey looks to be in tip-top shape here. Overall, it's just as outrageous as I expected it to be. I mean, come on, you can't expect any less from a movie which features a villain named The Mother Fucker. Reprising their roles from the first film are Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. New cast additions include Morris Chestnut, John Leguizamo and Donald Faison. New Images: FAST & FURIOUS 6, 2 GUNS, RIDDICK, KICK-ASS 2

FAST & FURIOUS 6

"Fast and Furious 6" is currently in production. The sixth installment in the franchise is once again directed by Justin Lin and will star Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Paul Walker, Gina Carano, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Joe Taslim and Luke Evans. The release date is set for May 24, 2013.

2 GUNS

Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg lead an all-star cast in 2 Guns, an explosive action film that tracks two operatives from competing bureaus who are forced on the run together. But there is a big problem with their unique alliance: Neither knows that the other is an undercover federal agent.

For the past 12 months, DEA agent Bobby Trench (Washington) and U.S. naval intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Wahlberg) have been reluctantly attached at the hip. RIDDICK

The latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000′s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004′s The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy. The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy.

NEWS UPDATE: Ghostbusters 3, Iron Man 3, Kick-Ass 2, Justice League and More

"Ghostbusters 3" will begin filming next summer. It's what the rumor mill is buzzing, but I for one will believe it when I see it, because there have been way too many missfires on this sequel's production. What we do sort of know for sure is that screenwriter Etan Cohen ("Men in Black 3") was brought in to do a rewrite of the script and that Dan Aykroyd has given up on trying to get Bill Murray back in the team. It's also likely that franchise director Ivan Reitman will also return to helm the sequel. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

The official synopses for "Iron Man 3" and "Kick-Ass 2" have been released, so check below if you want to know what the two comic book adaptations will be about.

IRON MAN 3

"Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. And speaking of comic book adaptations, it seems that after the success of "The Avengers", Warner Bros. and DC Comics look to bring their very own superhero mash-up to the big screen: "Justice League". Warners is looking to shoot the film next year and hopes to release it in the summer of 2015. Looks like a long shot, considering that the script is still in the works and no director or cast have been set. In case you're wondering what superheroes the "Justice League" encapsulates, here are a few samples : Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash.

As previously reported, a "Scarface" remake is currently in the works. A first draft of the script was delivered by David Ayer ("End of Watch", "Training Day") and recent news report that screenwriter Paul Attanasio ("Donnie Brasco") is currently rewriting it. Expect more details as the project unfolds.

And since everybody's rewriting everybody, here's another one. Mark Bomback ("Unstoppable", "Live Free or Die Hard") is rewriting the script for "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes". The first draft was written by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, who also wrote "Rise of the Planet of the Apes". The sequel also switched directors, Matt Reeves ("Let Me In", "Cloverfield") replacing Rupert Wyatt.
