Weekend Box-Office: INSIDIOUS 4 and JUMANJI Overtake THE LAST JEDI

Over the weekend we finally witnessed the fall of Disney's behemoth "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" after four consecutive weekends at #1. Responsible for this change at the box-office are the fourth installment in the horror franchise "Insidious: The Last Key" and the sequel/reboot "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle".

Weekend Box-Office: STAR WARS - THE LAST JEDI Highest Grossing Film of 2017

Disney reigns supreme at the box-office for a second consecutive year as their latest release, "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" held its ground through the New Year's weekend. The box-office also registered a significant boost in the last days of 2017, with almost all films in the charts holding over the same positions. Meanwhile Ridley Scott's "All the Money in the World" expanded nationwide.

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Trailers, TV Spots, Featurettes, Images and Posters

Written and directed by Rian Johnson ("Looper"), "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" is the eighth episode of the space opera franchise created by George Lucas (Episodes 1-6) and the second installment in the sequel trilogy.

"The Last Jedi" is a follow-up to "The Force Awakens" and continues the adventures of new characters Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe (Oscar Isaac) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) alongside franchise veterans Luke (Mark Hamill) and Leia (Carrie Fisher). New additions to the cast include Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran.

"Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi" opened in theaters on December 15th, 2017 and received almost universal acclaim from critics, who called it the best in the Star Wars saga since "Empire Strikes Back". Meanwhile, some of the fans have taken to sites like Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and IMDb to express their dislike of this new sequel, giving it the lowest scores of any film in the franchise. However, CinemaScore reports an "A" grade from opening night polls.

The film has grossed $220.8 million in its opening weekend, the second-best debut of all time, behind only "Star Wars: The Force Awakens".

Weekend Box-Office: STAR WARS - THE LAST JEDI Scores Second Largest Opening Ever

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" delivered on its promise of an epic box-office debut and gave the charts a serious boost over the weekend. In the meantime, Fox's animated feature "Ferdinand" barely registered in its opening weekend.

In Theaters: STAR WARS - THE LAST JEDI, FERDINAND, THE BALLAD OF LEFTY BROWN and BEYOND SKYLINE

This week in theaters we have the one film of the year that needs no introduction, "Star Wars: The Last Jedi", a film that received universal acclaim from critics, and yet fans of the franchise are calling it the worst installment, so far, even going so far as to say its worse than the prequel trilogy. Yikes ! Also out now is the animated feature "Ferdinand" from 20th Century Fox, which I think is an odd bit of timing, alongside a "Star Wars" movie, but also symbolic of the new acquisition of Fox by Disney.

In limited release we have the western film "The Ballad of Lefty Brown" and "Beyond Skyline", the odd sequel no one asked for yet is apparently an improvement on the original.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII Title and Poster Revealed

We finally have the title and a teaser poster for Rian Johnson's highly anticipated "Star Wars: Episode VIII". The sequel will be titled "Star Wars: The Last Jedi". Not a whole lot to say here, except that this one will keep fans puzzled right until the film opens in theaters on December 15th.

Note that the title refers to the last of the Jedi, but that says nothing about the Sith. I expect there will be at least one of those around for a spectacular lightsaber battle. Everything will probably build towards a real showdown between a better trained Rey and a more evil and self-controlled Kylo Ren.

The film will also star franchise newcomers Laure Dern, Benicio Del Toro and Kelly Marie Tran. Everyone else will return, except for the one we lost in "The Force Awakens".
