Box-Office: OUIJA Scares Its Way to the Top, JOHN WICK Surprising Debut

It's hard to compete with a horror film in the pre-Halloween weekend, which is why "Ouija" had little competition this week. The PG-13 flick earned $20 million in its first three days and it could continue its solid run throughout the Halloween weekend.

However, the High Achiever of the Week Award belongs to "John Wick", Keanu Reeves's highly acclaimed return to action form. The film opened in second place with $14 million, a modest sum, but more than was initially predicted. While the film didn't have much of a publicity campaign, it did receive plenty of glowing reviews and it's currently rated 8,3 on IMdB.com, which could translate to a solid word-of-mouth advantage in the following week, as opposed to "Ouija" which is scored 4,3 on the same website.

"Fury" maintained a solid second week in third place, earning another $13 million this weekend, which brings its domestic total to $46 million, not a lot when compared to its $68 million budget. "Gone Girl" follows close behind with $11 million. David Fincher's thriller is enjoying a more comfortable box-office performance with a worldwide total of $242 million split roughly even between domestic and foreign markets.

The top 5 is rounded up by "The Book of Life" which only fell 29% from the previous weekend, raising another $9.8 million for a $29.9 million domestic total.

Box-Office: FURY Marches Past GONE GIRL with $23 Million Debut

The World War II actioner "Fury" starring Brad Pitt and a strong ensemble cast opened with $23 million this weekend, while "Gone Girl" eventually dropped to second place, although Fincher's mystery thriller is still going pretty strong and very close to becoming the director's highest-grossing film if it manages to surpass "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". Meanwhile, this week's other wide releases, 20th Century Fox's animated fantasy "The Book of Life" opened with $17 million for a third-place ranking, and the Nicholas Sparks adaptation "The Best of Me" took fifth place in the top 10 with $10 million, an all time-low for films based on the author's books ("Dear John" opened with $30.5 million).

New THE BOOK OF LIFE Trailer, Clips and 14 Posters

20th Century Fox has released a new trailer, two clips and 14 posters for the animated feature "The Book of Life". Produced by Guillermo del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth") and directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez, the film tells the legend of Manolo, a conflicted hero and dreamer who sets off on an epic quest through magical, mythical and wondrous worlds in order to rescue his one true love and defend his village. The voice cast includes Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Hector Elizondo, Danny Trejo, Ice Cube and Placido Domingo.

"The Book of Life" opens in theaters on October 17th (3D).
