Two sequels conquered the box-office this weekend.
"22 Jump Street" starring
Channing Tatum and
Jonah Hill took the top spot with an explosive $60 million in three days, double the opening weekend gross of the first film and the second best opening for an R-rated comedy ever, behind
"The Hangover: Part II" which remains the undisputed record-holder.
Close behind, in second place, is the animated sequel
"How to Train Your Dragon 2", which grossed $50 million, slightly below expectations, but still almost double the opening gross of the first film. This also marks the best opening in two years for DreamWorks Animation.
In other news,
"Maleficent" is still going strong and moving towards the $200 million mark, while
"X-Men: Days of Future Past" has already achieved this performance over the weekend.
"Godzilla" and
"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" are also struggling to get there.
"Edge of Tomorrow" has dropped to No. 4 and grossed $15 million this weekend. The film hasn's performed too well domestically, despite
Tom Cruise's star power and $178 million worth of production values. The film's domestic gross is now at $56 million. But before we start sheding tears for the sci-fi blockbuster, I should mention that overseas the film is close to reaching $200 million.
Last week's No. 1,
"The Fault in Our Stars" starring
Shailene Woodley has suffered the week's sharpest drop, down 67% and even managed to drag behind
"Edge of Tomorrow". However, the film has now grossed $81 million domestically and an additional $38 million from international markets, which, for a movie that only cost $12 million to make, is not bad at all.
New Wide Releases: "22 Jump Street", "How to Train Your Dragon 2".
Biggest Drop : "The Fault in Our Stars" (-67%)
Smallest Drop : "Chef" (-13%)
