Weekend Box-Office: THE PREDATOR Disappoints Despite #1 Debut

"The Predator" claimed the top spot in its opening weekend, but 20th Century Fox has little to celebrate as the film delivered a pretty weak debut. Meanwhile Lionsgate's "A Simple Favor" performed very well. Pure Flix's "Unbroken: Path to Redemption", however, underperformed.

In Theaters: THE PREDATOR, A SIMPLE FAVOR, WHITE BOY RICK, UNBROKEN - PATH TO REDEMPTION and MANDY

If you've been itching for some R-rated alien mayhem, Shane Black's "The Predator", the fourth installment in the sci-fi horror Predator franchise, has landed in theaters. Overall the film looks like a bit of a disappointment for fans of the franchise, and the critical reception has been lukewarm, even slightly negative. Between the bad reviews and the controversy that has been circling the film's cast and director, the film might end up falling short of expectations in its opening weekend at the box-office.

Paul Feig's stylish thriller "A Simple Favor", which is now in theaters, has been getting a very positive reception and is expected to do well at the box-office over the weekend. Also, get ready for another awesome Matthew McConaughey performance in the fact-based crime drama "White Boy Rick".

If you enjoy faith-based dramas, here's another one this week, Pure Flix's biopic "Unbroken: Path to Redemption", a sequel of sorts that continues the story of Olympian and World War II hero Louis Zamperini, which was partially recounted in Angelina Jolie's 2014 drama "Unbroken". Both films are based on the non-fiction book by Laura Hillenbrand, "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption".

In limited release, watch Nicolas Cage go batshit crazy in the highly acclaimed 1980s-inspired exploitation film "Mandy".

Co-written and directed by Shane Black ("The Nice Guys"), "The Predator" is the fourth installment in the Predator series. The film features a new version of the universe's most lethal hunters, who are now stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, genetically upgraded with DNA from other species.

When a young boy (Jacob Tremblay) accidentally triggers their return to Earth, a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers (Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Thomas Jane and Alfie Allen) and a disgruntled science teacher (Olivia Munn) try to protect a small town from the invading aliens.

"The Predator" premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2018 and was released in theaters on September 14, 2018. The film received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics.

First Images of THE PREDATOR Cast Feature Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn and Thomas Jane

Writer/director Shane Black has released the first official look at the cast of his upcoming sci-fi thriller "The Predator" via Twitter. The film is a sequel to the 1987 "Predator", and Black is currently filming in Vancouver.

The first image is a nice and clean studio shoot featuring Boyd Holbrook ("Logan"), Olivia Munn ("X-Men: Apocalypse"), Alfie Allen ("Game of Thrones") Trevante Rhodes ("Moonlight"), Sterling K. Brown ("American Crime Story"), Jacob Tremblay ("Room"), and Keegan-Michael Key. The second image also reveals the presence of Thomas Jane, although how important his character will be in the film is still a mystery, especially considering that he wasn't in the first picture. Yvonne Strahovski also stars in the film, but wasn't featured in any of these first images.

"The Predator" is set to open in theaters on February 9, 2018.

Olivia Munn Joins Shane Black's PREDATOR Sequel

20th Century Fox's new Predator sequel, simply titled "The Predator", is coming along quite nicely under the direction of "The Nice Guys" writer/director Shane Black. The cast is being rouned up as we speak and after the announcement that Boyd Holbrook ("Gone Girl") has replaced Benicio Del Toro for the lead role, we now know that Olivia Munn ("X-Men: Apocalypse") has joined the reboot. Munn will play a scientist, while Holbook will be starring as a Special Forces commando.

Here is what Black had to say about the film:

"I think the Predator movies have slightly veered from typical sci-fi in that there is a sort of thriller aspect to them. I think it should be scary, I think it should be funny, and I think ultimately it should be wondrous and about perceiving things that human beings very seldom get a chance to see… I don’t mean movie audiences I mean characters in the movie. I’m not saying the movie will be nothing anyone’s seen before (laughs)."

Production on "The Predator" is set to begin in February and the release date is scheduled for February 8th, 2018.
