Weekend Box Office Predator Badlands

During a relatively quiet weekend, "Predator: Badlands" dominated the box office with a franchise-best performance. Meanwhile, a slew of lofty newcomers failed to attract moviegoers, including the inspirational true story drama "Sarah's Oil", the historical courtroom thriller "Nuremberg" starring Russell Crowe and Rami Malek, the psychological drama "Die My Love" starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, and the boxing biopic "Christy" starring Sydney Sweeney. The latter failed to make the Top 10.

Elle Fanning to Star in Standalone PREDATOR Movie Titled BADLANDS
Elle Fanning ("Maleficent", "The Great") is in talks to star in the upcoming new "Predator" movie that will be directed by Dan Trachtenberg ("Prey") from a script he co-wrote with Patrick Aison.

The 20th Century Studios project is titled "Badlands" and is intended to expand the franchise's universe, after 2022's "Prey" was a critical and streaming hit. "Prey 2" is currently in early development with Amber Midthunder set to reprise her role.

"Badlands" was announced in February and production is expected to begin later this year. Plot details are unavailable at this point. Insiders close to the project say Fanning is a fan of the franchise and once executives got wind of her interest, they moved to secure her a meeting with Trachtenberg. Following that meeting, Fanning was on board and a deal is currently in the works.

Fanning can next be seen in James Mangold's "A Complete Unknown" where she plays Sylvie Russo opposite Timothee Chalamet's Bob Dylan.

Olivia Munn to star in Predator sequel
20th Century Fox's new Predator sequel, simply titled "The Predator", is coming along quite nicely under the direction of "The Nice Guys" writer/director Shane Black. The cast is being rouned up as we speak and after the announcement that Boyd Holbrook ("Gone Girl") has replaced Benicio Del Toro for the lead role, we now know that Olivia Munn ("X-Men: Apocalypse") has joined the reboot. Munn will play a scientist, while Holbook will be starring as a Special Forces commando.

Here is what Black had to say about the film:
"I think the Predator movies have slightly veered from typical sci-fi in that there is a sort of thriller aspect to them. I think it should be scary, I think it should be funny, and I think ultimately it should be wondrous and about perceiving things that human beings very seldom get a chance to see… I don’t mean movie audiences I mean characters in the movie. I’m not saying the movie will be nothing anyone’s seen before (laughs)."
Production on "The Predator" is set to begin in February and the release date is scheduled for February 8th, 2018.

predator-sequel-shane-black

Shane Black
It's no surprise, really, that 20th Century Fox is moving forward with a new installment in the "Predator" franchise. What is surprising, though, is that Fox has chosen "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and "Iron Man 3" writer/director Shane Black to write and direct the movie. He will write the first treatment of the script, and then scripting duties will be handled by Fred Dekker. Although initially this bit of news came as a report about a reboot being in the works, things were clarified by Black himself.

Here's what the filmmaker had to say about the sequel: "As far as Fred and I are concerned anyway, why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine ?" He also added that he likes "the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button." Dekker and Black have worked together in the past on the action comedy "The Monster Squad", which Dekker directed and co-wrote with Black.

This sounds like a bold move on Fox's part, but one that could pay off. The previous attempt to reboot the franchise with 2010's "Predators" produced by Robert Rodriguez and directed by Nimrod Antal, did not turn out the way the studio was expecting, so this new attempt clearly requires a different approach that, hopefully, Shane Black can deliver.
